Height matching
Profiles are sized by rise, so you can match the trim to the actual step between your two floors.
Every floor type
Ramps for vinyl and hybrid, cover strips between hard floors, and napdown bars to finish carpet edges.
Finishes
Many DTA profiles are anodised at the factory in colours such as bronze, champagne, silver and black, so lengths bought later still match.
Traffic
Commercial cover strips and napdown bars suit busier areas, and diminishing strips are specified for trolley traffic.
A transition ramp is a profile that covers the join between two floors and eases any change in height, so there is no raw edge to lift or trip over. The right one depends on the height difference, the floor on each side and how much traffic the doorway gets.
For thin floors, the Vinyl Flooring Transition Ramp suits 2mm vinyl, diminishing transition strips come in 2mm, 3mm and 5mm heights, and Ramp-It PVC rolls cover rises from 2mm to 7mm. The Hybrid Flooring Transition Ramp comes in 5.5mm and 6.7mm opening heights. Bigger steps are covered by MDF Transition Ramps up to a 12mm rise, Transition Ramp Retro-Fit up to 16mm and the Aluminium Transition Edge up to 18mm.
Where two floors finish at similar heights, a cover strip bridges the gap. Hammered and rippled profiles suit up to 3mm of difference, senior and commercial up to 6mm, and the Heavy Duty Aluminium Cover Strip 50mm up to 10mm. Seamless Transition Cover Trims in flat, curved and tapered edge styles click onto multi-height bases over expansion joints. For carpet, napdown bars and Multi Base profiles come pinned or pinless. Most profiles are from DTA, in mill finish or anodised colours.
Common Questions
Measure the finished height of each floor where they meet and work out the difference, then pick a profile made for that rise. For example, the Vinyl Flooring Transition Ramp suits 2mm vinyl, the Hybrid Flooring Transition Ramp comes in 5.5mm and 6.7mm openings, and Transition Ramp Retro-Fit covers rises from 3mm to 16mm. A profile that is too low leaves a gap, and one too high sits proud of the floor.
A cover strip is a flat bar that bridges a join between floors at nearly the same height, such as a doorway between two hard floors. A transition ramp has a slope that takes you from a higher floor down to a lower one. Our cover strips handle height differences of up to 3mm, 6mm or 10mm depending on the profile, while ramps go up to 18mm.
Use a napdown bar or a Multi Base profile. Pinned versions grip conventionally installed carpet, the kind stretched over gripper strips, while pinless versions suit carpet that is glued down. Multi Base Pinned is made for carpet meeting ceramic tiles or wooden floating floors, and a Multi Base Extension raises it to meet taller hard floors. Commercial napdown bars suit higher-traffic installations.
A floating floor has to be free to move. Sunstar’s hybrid installation guide, for example, calls for a 10mm expansion gap wherever the floor meets a transition, and says trims must not be fixed to the flooring. Choose a profile that covers that gap without pinning the boards down, and check the installation guide for your own floor. We can help you pick one that suits.
They cover expansion or control joints, the gaps left so a floor can move, between two areas of the same flooring. The trim is 37mm wide and push-clicks onto a separate multi-height base, which comes in 5.5 to 9.2mm, 9 to 12.7mm and 12 to 15.7mm ranges to suit the floor build-up. They come in flat, curved and tapered edge styles.
