About Grouts
Grout is the material that fills the joints between tiles. It locks the tiles into one surface, keeps dirt out of the gaps and sets much of the finished look through its colour and line width.
Grouts are coded under ISO 13007. CG is a cement based grout, with class 1 normal and class 2 improved, and the letters W and A add reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance. RG is a reaction resin grout, usually epoxy, which cures by chemical reaction. Mapei Keracolor GG Large Grain Grout and SikaCeram-690 Elite Grout are classified CG2WA, while Davco Superfine White Grout is CG1 under AS ISO 13007 and Ardex WJ50 Wide Joint Grout is CG1 under AS 4992.
Joint width narrows the choice. Ardex FS DD suits joints up to 4mm and surfaces prone to scratching such as porcelain, and Davco Superfine White Grout suits 1 to 3mm wall joints. Ardex FG 8 covers 1 to 8mm, SikaCeram-690 Elite 1 to 10mm, Keracolor GG 4 to 15mm, Mapei Ultracolor Plus up to 20mm and Ardex WJ50 2 to 50mm. Epoxy Grouts holds Ardex EG 15, Mapei Kerapoxy Easy Design and Davco Epoxy Grout. Ardex Grout Booster and Davco 4 in 1 Grout Additive modify cement grouts, and Davco Tile and Grout Cleaner handles aged, stained grout.

Should I choose cement or epoxy grout?
Cement grout suits most homes. It is easy to work, comes in many colours and suits walls and floors inside and out. Epoxy grout cures by chemical reaction into a joint that does not absorb water and resists chemicals and staining, so it is chosen for commercial kitchens, food areas and other hard use. It takes more care to apply, and excess must come off the tile before it sets.
How do I choose a grout colour?
A grout close to the tile colour hides the joints and gives a calm, even surface. A contrasting grout outlines each tile and shows off the laying pattern, which suits subway and feature tiles. On floors, very light grout can show dirt in the joints sooner. Compare a grout colour sample against your actual tile in the room where it will be laid before you decide.
Which grout should I use with polished porcelain?
Use a fine, non-sanded grout. Ardex FS DD is a fine, non-sanded grout Ardex recommends for surfaces prone to scratching such as porcelain, for joints up to 4mm, where a sanded grout risks scratching the tile face during application and clean-up. It is water repellent and contains Ardex Grout Shield to combat mould growth. Try the grout and your cleaning method on a spare tile first.
When should I seal grout?
Let new grout cure first. Dry-Treat advises a minimum of 3 days before sealing grout with its STAIN PROOF sealers, and a grout sealer roller applicator helps keep sealer on the joint. Acid cleaners need longer: Acid cleaners need longer: let new grout cure fully before using one, and follow the cleaner’s own instructions.. Always follow the data sheet for your sealer.
Do I need a grout additive?
Not always. Ardex Grout Booster is mixed with Ardex cement grouts to improve adhesion, flexibility and abrasion strength, and is recommended over substrates that move, such as timber floors. Davco 4 in 1 Grout Additive increases the flexibility, strength and water resistance of cement grouts, for example over fibre cement sheet floors. Check the grout’s data sheet before adding anything.
