About Timber Treatments
Timber treatments are oils and finishes that protect exterior timber from weathering, and this category holds Preschem decking oils for decks, fences, pergolas and other outdoor timber. They soak into the wood to help protect it from UV, moisture and mould while keeping a natural oiled look.
All three are oil based exterior finishes sold in 4, 10 and 20 Litre sizes. Preschem Aussie Clear Decking Oil is pigmented to look transparent on mid to dark timbers such as Merbau, Jarrah and Red Gum. Preschem Aussie Clear Light Decking Oil is made for blond hardwoods such as Blackbutt and Silvertop Ash. Preschem Aussie Timber Finish Walnut Decking Oil is different again: its pigment is opaque, in a walnut brown, so it changes the colour of the timber rather than staying transparent. Preschem’s data sheet for Aussie Clear says it penetrates rather than forming a film, so correctly applied it will not peel or crack.
For Aussie Clear and Clear Light, Preschem’s directions are to apply one generous coat to clean, dry timber by brush, roller, spray or lamb’s wool applicator. Wipe off excess oil left on the surface after 2 hours. Allow at least 48 hours before foot traffic. Coverage is up to 12 square metres per litre on dressed timber and 8 on sawn timber. Read the label and safety data sheet before use.

Should I choose Aussie Clear or Aussie Clear Light?
Match the oil to the timber colour. Preschem pigments Aussie Clear to look transparent on mid to dark timbers such as Merbau, Jarrah and Red Gum. Aussie Clear Light suits blond hardwoods such as Blackbutt and Silvertop Ash, where its pigment will slightly change the colour. Preschem now puts Cedar and Cypress under Clear Light. For CCA, LOSP, ACQ or Tanalised treated pine, Preschem recommends a separate treated pine product rather than Aussie Clear.
How often should a deck be re-oiled with Aussie Clear?
Preschem recommends a second application after the first 6 to 12 months of weathering. In extreme weather, regular applications every 6 to 12 months may be needed to keep the colour, especially on decking. High traffic areas like steps and doorways can be touched up as needed. Faded timber can be brought back with a wash and a fresh coat, while badly weathered timber should be cleaned with an oxalic acid based wood cleaner or sanded back first.
Can I oil a new Merbau deck straight away?
No. Preschem advises letting waxy timbers such as Merbau weather first, so the surface wax breaks down and the oil can soak in. Their website says 4 to 6 weeks and their older data sheet says up to three months, so allow at least 6 weeks and check with us if you are unsure. Old weathered timber should be cleaned first with an oxalic acid based wood cleaner. Apply only to dry surfaces free from dirt, grease and wax, and do not oil when dew or rain is expected.
