Floor protection rolls, boards, film and sheets keep timber, tiles, vinyl and carpet covered while trades are on site, with tapes to hold everything in place.
Finished floors are easy to scratch, stain or dent while trades are still on site, furniture is moving in or a renovation is under way. Laying down a protective sheet, board or film before work starts keeps timber, tiles, vinyl and carpet covered until the job is done.
Rolls are sold by coverage, from 26.5m2 SupaBord Renovator Grade and 30m2 Contractor Grade up to 60m2 Multi Guard and 100m2 Carpet Saver film. Polycushion 4mm, VISY Guardboard and a 2mm protection roll are other options, along with woven poly and black builders film. For a rigid layer, lay down MDF sheets in 3mm, 9mm and 16mm or 3mm Corflute sheeting. SupaBord joint and edge tapes and 48mm masking tapes hold everything in place.

Start with the floor you are protecting. For carpet, a self-adhesive film such as Carpet Saver goes straight down with nothing to tape. For new timber, tiles or stone that have just been laid, choose a breathable board such as SupaBord Contractor Grade or Capitol so the floor can keep curing underneath. Polished timber, stone and benchtops are best under a cushioned roll such as Polycushion, Multi Guard or Protect IT, which soaks up knocks and keeps grit off the surface.
How long and how hard the job is matters too. For a quick paint job, a breathable board or builders film taped at the edges is usually enough. On a long build with heavy trades, lay a cushioned roll first and cover it with MDF or Corflute sheets where trolleys, ladders and tools will travel. Use the tape made for your protection and check how many days it is rated for before the job starts.

75m2 Polycushion 4mm Floor Protection is described as used over polished timber, slate, marble and benchtops. It is a double laminate woven sheet with a foam backing that holds grit away from the finished surface and cushions point impacts. A roll is 1.5m x 50m and covers 75 m². 30m2 Capitol Heavy Duty Floor Protection is listed for wood, concrete, stone, ceramic tile, linoleum, VCT and epoxy coatings.
100m2 Carpet Saver Floor Protection Film is a self-adhesive film that sticks to the carpet itself, so there is nothing to tape down. It is 105 microns thick with an anti-slip surface, on a 1m x 100m roll, and lifts off without residue when used as directed. Polywoven Floor and Carpet Protection is a woven roll for temporary protection of floors and carpet during construction, in an 1830mm x 100m roll covering 183 m² or a 4000mm centrefolded roll at 50m covering 200 m².
For SupaBord, the two tapes are not interchangeable. SupaBord Joint Tape 40m Roll joins protection boards to each other and is rated for up to 90 days. SupaBord 150 Day Edge Tape fixes protection to floors and walls and is rated for up to 150 days. Both are described as breathable. Corflute 3mm x 2400mm x 1200mm Sheeting can be joined with good quality cloth or packaging tape.
Compare the coverage per roll with your floor area. 26.5m2 SupaBord Renovator Grade Medium Duty Floor Protection is an 800mm wide, 33m roll covering approximately 26.5 m². 50m2 Protect IT 2mm Floor Protection is 50m x 1000mm, 60m2 Construction Multi Guard Floor Protection is 50m x 1.2m, and 75m2 Polycushion 4mm Floor Protection is 1.5m x 50m.
30m2 SupaBord Contractor Grade Heavy Duty Floor Protection is described as vapour permeable and breathable, letting freshly laid floors cure evenly underneath while the sheet resists water spills and impact damage above. 30m2 Capitol Heavy Duty Floor Protection is described as liquid resistant and breathable, allowing the substrate underneath to breathe rather than trapping moisture against it. SupaBord Joint Tape is made from breathable, vapour permeable non-woven paper to promote even finishes in curing floors.
