About Hand Tools
Plenty of the work in laying tiles and floors is done with small manual tools that cut, spread, grout and clean up. These non-powered tools stay in the kit for setting out, laying, finishing and stripping old materials, on trade sites and at home.
Tile Cutters holds the Sigma manual cutters, from 37cm models to the 155cm Art 4FN and the KERA-CUT large format cutter. Trowels and Spreaders includes adhesive trowels, gauging and splash trowels and poly floats, while Grouting Tools has epoxy grout floats, pointed grouters and grout clean-up systems. Soudal sausage guns, heavy duty guns and nozzles are grouped under Caulking Guns and Accessories. Other Hand Tools has a rubber mallet, a contour gauge, chalk lines and suction cups, along with DTA scrapers and a puller for fence posts and pickets.

What size notched trowel do I need for tiling?
The tile adhesive’s data sheet is the guide, as substrate, tile type and tile size all affect the notch. Larger tiles generally need a deeper notch, and large format, thin or ribbed-back tiles should also be back buttered (a thin coat of adhesive spread on the back of the tile as well). Lift a tile now and then to check for voids. DTA adhesive trowels come in 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 15mm notches.
What is the difference between an adhesive trowel and an adhesive spreader?
An adhesive trowel has a long flat blade notched on the front and one side, such as the DTA 400mm trowel or the 280mm stainless steel trowel, for covering larger areas quickly. An adhesive spreader is shorter with a square-notched edge, and the DTA Handymans Adhesive Spreader at 145mm suits small repairs and touch ups. Gauging and splash trowels are for mixing and applying adhesive.
What tools do I need for grouting tiles?
You need a float to work grout into the joints and a way to clean the face of the tiles. Rubber pointed grouters from DTA and B.A.T. reach into internal corners, and the Epoxy Grout Float Hard has a hard rubber base for epoxy grout. For clean up, the DTA Boss Grout Clean Up System and the Siri Baby Grout Clean Up System each combine a bucket, rollers and sponge.
Which caulking gun should I buy?
Match the gun to the pack. For 600ml sausages, choose the Soudal Heavy Duty Sausage Gun or the Trade Sausage Caulking Gun. For standard cartridges, the Ardex Heavy Duty Caulking Gun has a 26:1 thrust ratio, giving more push per squeeze for thick fillers and adhesives. The Ardex dual cartridge gun takes 1:1 and 2:1 twin cartridges, and Soudal nozzles help reach tight corners.
How do I remove old silicone and grout?
Cut and peel away as much old sealant as you can, then use Soudal Sealant Remover, which breaks down cured silicone and MS polymer residue in as little as 10 minutes. The Soudal Multi Tool has tile-safe edges for stripping sealant. For grout, the Roberts Deluxe Grout Remover Tool has a twin blade for wide or tight joints. Test the remover on a hidden spot first, as it can mark porous surfaces, and clean the joint before resealing.
