About Carpet Accessories
Carpet accessories are the parts that hold a carpet in place and finish it neatly: gripper strips around the room, tape to join lengths, trims where the carpet meets another floor, and film to protect it once it is down.
Carpet gripper, also called smoothedge or tack strip, is fixed around the perimeter so the carpet can be stretched over its pins. MJS Maxximus Max Grip comes in two widths, with versions for timber and concrete subfloors.
For joins, RLA Max Seam heat bond tapes go under the seam and are melted with a seaming iron. Centre bead, silicon release, gold foil and dual bond versions are available, and the dual bond tape is made for dual bond underlay installations. Max Bond Cold Seam Tape needs no iron and suits small repairs and DIY jobs.
Where carpet ends at a doorway or another floor, DTA trims cover the edge. Napdown bars come pinned for conventionally stretched carpet or pinless for direct stick carpet. Multi Base suits carpet meeting tiles or floating floors, with an extension piece for taller floors. Cover strips are rated by the height difference they bridge, and diminishing transition strips in 2mm, 3mm and 5mm take thin vinyl down to a concrete slab.
Interface Intertac Plus is an adhesive for Interface carpet tiles, and Carpet Saver film protects new carpet while other trades finish.

What size carpet gripper strip do I need?
MJS Max Grip smoothedge comes in two sizes. Maxximus 25 is 25mm wide with two rows of pins, and Maxximus 32 is 32mm wide with three rows. Both are 7mm thick, 1200mm long, five ply and commercially rated. A carton of the 25 holds 100 pieces (120m) and a carton of the 32 holds 70 pieces (84m), so measure the room perimeter to work out how many cartons you need.
Can carpet gripper be fixed to a concrete floor?
Yes. Both Max Grip sizes are offered in a concrete substrate version and a wood substrate version, so choose the one that matches your subfloor. The Maxximus 32 is also available as a concrete version with short carpet pins and in a standard version supplied without pins. Check the options on the product page before ordering so the strips suit the floor you are fixing into.
What is the difference between heat bond carpet tape and cold seam tape?
Heat bond tape sits under a carpet seam and its adhesive is melted with a seaming iron, giving the strongest join. The RLA Max Seam range comes in 100m rolls in centre bead, silicon release, gold foil and dual bond versions. Max Bond Cold Seam Tape, often called step on tape, needs no iron and comes in a 5m roll, which suits DIY installs and small repairs.
Which trim do I use where carpet meets tiles or timber?
For conventionally stretched carpet meeting ceramic tiles or a floating timber floor, use DTA Multi Base Pinned, and Multi Base Extension adds height for taller hard floors. Pinned napdown bars also suit stretched carpet, while pinless napdown bars and Multi Base Pinless are for direct stick carpet. If both floors finish at a similar height, a cover strip rated for the height difference is a simpler option.
How do I protect new carpet while other trades are working?
Carpet Saver Floor Protection Film is a self-adhesive film that sticks directly to the carpet, so it stays put without taping. It is 105 microns thick with an anti-slip surface and comes on a 1m wide by 100m roll. Lay it once the carpet is installed and lift it when the work is finished. Follow the directions on the product for how long it can stay down.
