About Flooring Underlay
Flooring underlay is the layer that sits between the subfloor and the finished floor. Depending on what goes on top, it gives a flat and firm base, cushions a floating floor, reduces footfall noise or keeps subfloor moisture away from the boards.
For tiles over timber floorboards, plywood or particleboard, use a fibre cement sheet. BGC Ceramic Tile Underlay (1800 x 1200) and Hume Prima Ceramic Tile Underlay (1800 x 900) are 6mm sheets. They give the tile bed a rigid base, so it does not move with the boards. Vinyl and other resilient coverings are thin, flexible floors that show every bump beneath them. Weathertex Trimtec, Betanzos Tablex and Australian Panel Products HPF Underlay sheets lay over strip timber, particleboard, plywood or concrete. ePLY 5.5mm Plywood Underlay is another smooth, stable base for vinyl.
For click-together laminate and timber floating floors, the Floating Floor Underlay range has 2mm to 4mm underlays from MJS, Polycell and VibraMat, plus G3 EVA. Some are made for sound, some for moisture and some for both. Sunstar hybrid flooring has an underlay built in, and Sunstar says foam underlays must not be used under it, so ask us before adding any layer.

Which underlay do I need for my floor?
It depends on the floor going down. Tiles over a timber subfloor need a fibre cement tile underlay. Vinyl and other thin, flexible coverings need a smooth, dense sheet such as hardboard, fibreboard or plywood underlay. Click-together laminate and timber floating floors need a roll underlay from our floating floor underlay range. Sunstar hybrid flooring has an underlay built in, so check before buying another.
What goes under tiles on a timber floor?
A fibre cement tile underlay. BGC and Hume Prima Ceramic Tile Underlay are 6mm sheets laid over new or existing floorboards, plywood or particleboard, giving slate and ceramic tiles a stable base that won’t move with the timber. Hume says that in wet areas, or anywhere that could be splashed or flooded, a waterproofing membrane must go between the underlay and the tiles.
What does an acoustic rating on underlay mean?
An acoustic rating shows how much footfall noise an underlay stops from reaching the room below. G3 EVA 3mm Acoustic Underlay has a 5-star rating under the AAAC (Association of Australasian Acoustical Consultants) scheme. MJS Sound Block 3mm lists an impact rating of L’nT,w 47 over a concrete slab, where a lower number means less noise. In apartments, check your owners corporation rules before choosing.
Do I need a moisture barrier under a floating floor?
A moisture barrier is a plastic or foil film that stops damp from the subfloor reaching the floor above. It matters most over concrete slabs and subfloors close to the ground. Most of our floating floor underlays have one built in. Moisture Guard 3mm has a 200 micron film and accepts slab readings below 90 percent relative humidity, and Silvertread uses a metalised film for ground-level subfloors.
