Fibre cement sheets for cladding, eaves lining and rendered wall systems.
Fibre cement is a sheet material made from cement, sand and cellulose fibre. It is used outside because it does not rot or absorb moisture the way a timber based sheet does, and it holds a painted or rendered finish. Sheets are supplied in different thicknesses for different jobs: thinner sheets for cladding and eaves lining, and a thicker base sheet where a render coat will be applied over the top.
Common Questions
A cladding sheet is thinner, usually 4.5mm, and is used for board and batten or flat sheet cladding and for eaves lining. A base sheet is thicker, usually 7.5mm, and is designed to carry a render finish. Base sheets are often shiplapped at the edges so the joints do not need patching before rendering.
Manufacturers state that fibre cement resists damage from rot, moisture and termites when the sheets are installed and maintained in accordance with their published instructions. The exact wording, and the conditions attached to it, vary between manufacturers, so check the installation guide and warranty linked on the individual product page.
Yes. Cutting fibre cement releases respirable crystalline silica dust. Cut outdoors where possible, use the cutting methods the manufacturer specifies, and wear a P1 or P2 respirator to AS/NZS 1716. The safety data sheet is linked on each product page.
Fibre cement sheets are generally suitable for both timber and light gauge steel framing, but the fastener type and spacing differ between the two. Check the installation guide for the sheet you are using and the frame you are fixing to.
