About Square Drains

A square floor drain, or floor waste, sits at the lowest point of a wet area floor, with the tiles graded to fall towards it from all sides. Its cover sits over the waste pipe opening and lets water through, so the size and finish of the drain become part of the look of the room.

There are two styles. Grated drains have a visible metal cover and come in 86x86mm, 89x89mm and 103x103mm in chrome and matt black, with 110x110mm drains in chrome, gold and matt black. Tile-in drains have a tray that takes a cut piece of the floor tile, so the drain blends into the floor. They come in 100x100mm in chrome and matt black, and 115x115mm in brushed gold and satin nickel.

The first two numbers in each product name give the size of the square top. The last number varies between the waste size and the overall depth depending on the product, so check it with us before ordering. For example, the Floor Drain Chrome 110 x 110 x 88mm with Deep Waste lists an 88mm waste size, a 75mm overall depth and a removable round grate in chrome finished brass. Check the waste against the pipe in your floor before ordering. For water running along a wall or doorway, look at long drains instead.

Common Questions

Square Drains FAQ

Should I choose a grated or tile-in square drain?

A grated drain has a visible metal cover, so it becomes a small feature in chrome, matt black or gold. A tile-in drain holds a piece of the same tile as the floor, so it blends in with the surface around it. Tile-in drains need the tile cut to fit the tray, which your tiler does while laying the floor. Both styles sit at the low point of the floor.

What do the three numbers in a square drain name mean?

The first two numbers are the size of the square top in millimetres, such as 110x110mm. The last number refers to the waste. On the Floor Drain Chrome 110 x 110 x 88mm with Deep Waste, it is the 88mm waste size, with a 75mm overall depth. Measure the waste pipe opening in your floor and check it against the product before ordering, or ask us to confirm.

When is a linear drain better than a square drain?

A square drain works at a single low point, with the floor graded towards it from all sides. If you want the floor to fall one way, towards a wall or doorway, or you want a shower with no step at the entry, a linear drain is usually the better fit. Our long drains range has Lauxes linear and tile insert grates for those jobs.
