About Floating Floor Underlay
Floating floor underlay is the thin roll or sheet laid under a click-together floor that isn’t glued or nailed down. Because the floor rests on it, the underlay needs to give an even bed, and most also reduce footfall noise, keep subfloor moisture away from the boards, or both.
For sound, MJS Sound Block comes in 2mm and 3mm, the 3mm made from high-density natural rubber with a built-in moisture membrane. G3 EVA Floating Floor 3mm Acoustic Underlay has a 5-star acoustic rating and a 100 micron moisture barrier. VibraMat Acoustic Underlay 4mm is the thickest option and comes in 1.1 x 1.1 metre sheets that can also go under floor tiles.
For moisture, MJS Moisture Block 2mm and Moisture Guard 3mm have polyethylene film built in, and Moisture Guard’s heavier 200 micron film accepts damper concrete slabs. From Polycell, Softwalk 2mm pairs foam with a moisture-resistant film, and Silvertread 2mm uses a metalised film for subfloors close to the ground. Most of these are made for laminate and timber floating floors. Sunstar hybrid planks have an integrated underlay, and Sunstar says foam underlays should not be used under them, so check before adding one.

Which floating floor underlay should I choose?
Start with the bigger risk. In an apartment or upstairs room, noise is usually the concern, so look at acoustic options such as Sound Block, G3 EVA or VibraMat. Over a concrete slab or a subfloor close to the ground, moisture matters more, so choose one with a built-in film such as Moisture Block, Moisture Guard or Silvertread. Sound Block 3mm and G3 EVA handle both.
Does my hybrid floor need one of these underlays?
Usually not. Hybrid planks generally have an underlay bonded to the board already, and Sunstar says foam underlays must not be used under theirs. A rubber underlay is sometimes possible for extra sound control, but Sunstar has to approve it first. Check the installation guide for your own floor, or ask us and we will check it with you.
How are underlay rolls joined?
The joins matter as much as the underlay, because a gap breaks the moisture barrier. MJS Sound Block 2mm and Moisture Guard 3mm have a 100mm overlap with an adhesive strip, and Sound Block 3mm has self-adhesive joining tape. Moisture Block 2mm uses a joining flap and tape, and G3 EVA rolls overlap by 200mm. Follow the joining method for the product you buy.
