Start with how the room is used. Timber veneer suits living areas and hallways where real timber matters. Hybrid flooring clicks together as a floating floor and is a common choice for open plan kitchens and family rooms. Laminate brings Australian timber looks such as jarrah, brushbox and spotted gum to bedrooms, hallways and living rooms. With cork, the decision is about installation: floating planks click together, while glue-down cork comes as planks and traditional tiles bonded to the subfloor.
Underlay goes down before any of it. Acoustic and moisture block rolls sit under floating floors, and hardboard, plywood and ceramic tile underlay sheets go over the subfloor before the finished floor or tiles. Diminishing strips, cover strips and napdown bars tidy doorways and changes in floor height. Sealers, coatings and cleaners sit in the accessories section. What's the difference between hybrid, laminate, veneer and cork flooring?
Hybrid combines a rigid waterproof core with a realistic timber-look wear layer, making it the toughest all-rounder for kitchens, living areas and light commercial use. Laminate uses a similar wear layer over a fibreboard core at a lower price point but is less tolerant of moisture. Veneer is a thin layer of real timber over an engineered core, for a genuine timber look and feel. Cork is a naturally warm, quiet, renewable material suited to bedrooms, studies and living areas. Do I need a moisture barrier or vapour barrier under my new floor?
It depends on the subfloor and the product. Concrete slabs usually need a moisture barrier under floating floors, and some underlays have one built in. Check the installation guide for the product you choose, or ask us and we'll confirm what your subfloor needs.
How much flooring do I need to order for my room?
Measure the floor area in square metres and add an allowance for offcuts and waste, more for rooms with lots of corners or a diagonal lay. Each product page shows how much one pack covers, and our team can check your quantities before you order.
Can I install new flooring over an existing floor?
Often, yes. Many floating floors can go over a flat, sound, existing hard floor, but not over carpet. The existing floor needs to be level and firmly fixed. Check the product's installation guide, or talk to us about your current floor.
Is anti-static or ESD flooring available, and when do I need it?
