Common Questions

Flooring FAQ

What's the difference between hybrid, laminate, veneer and cork flooring?

Hybrid combines a rigid waterproof core with a realistic timber-look wear layer, making it the toughest all-rounder for kitchens, living areas and light commercial use. Laminate uses a similar wear layer over a fibreboard core at a lower price point but is less tolerant of moisture. Veneer is a thin layer of real timber over an engineered core, for a genuine timber look and feel. Cork is a naturally warm, quiet, renewable material suited to bedrooms, studies and living areas. Browse each range or get in touch and we’ll help you match the right one to your room.

Do I need a moisture barrier or vapour barrier under my new floor?

Generally yes if you’re laying over a concrete slab, especially a ground-floor or below-grade slab, since rising moisture can damage the floor from underneath. A vapour barrier underlay is usually required in these cases; check the specific installation guide for your chosen range, or ask our team, as requirements vary between hybrid, laminate and timber-look products.

How much flooring do I need to order for my room?

Measure the room’s length and width to get the square metre area, then add a wastage allowance, typically 5-10% for a standard rectangular room, and up to 15% for rooms with lots of cuts, angles or a diagonal lay pattern. Our team can help you work out an accurate order quantity from your room dimensions.

Can I install new flooring over an existing floor?

Often yes for floating floors like hybrid and laminate, provided the existing surface is flat, stable and clean, though thick pile carpet, uneven tiles or a damaged subfloor will usually need to be removed or levelled first. Glue-down and cork tile installations are more particular about subfloor prep. We can advise on what your existing floor will and won’t support.

Is anti-static or ESD flooring available, and when do I need it?

Yes, we stock anti-static and ESD-rated flooring products for server rooms, workshops, labs and other environments where static discharge is a safety or equipment risk. These are specialist products with specific installation and earthing requirements, so speak to our team about the right system for your space.
