About Flooring Adhesives
The right flooring adhesive depends on the floor covering, the subfloor it is going onto and how the room will be used. Each adhesive here is made for particular coverings, so start with the covering, then check the data sheet for suitable subfloors, open time (how long you have to lay the floor once the glue is spread) and traffic limits.
For vinyl and LVT, MJS Max Bond 360 MS suits sheet vinyl, LVT and LVP, Max Bond 2012 is a hard-setting adhesive for PVC planks and tiles, and Max Bond 88 and 107 are made for sheet vinyl. Mapei Ultrabond ECO V4 Evolution and Ardex AF 171 are other resilient flooring options, while Mapei Ultrabond ECO MS 4LVT bonds LVT on walls as well as floors. For linoleum and rubber, look at Max Bond 4000 or Ardex AF 180 MS.
Timber floors are covered by Mapei Ultrabond ECO S955 1K and P990 1K, in 15kg pails or 600ml sausages, and Sika SikaBond T-55J. For carpet, Max Bond 106 Contract gives extra open time on long commercial runs, Max Bond 2010 Cush N Lay is made for double bond installations, where the underlay is glued to the floor and the carpet to the underlay, and Max Bond 2009 and Mapei Ultrabond ECO Tack TX AU stay tacky to hold carpet tiles. Max Bond 101 and 102 are contact adhesives for vinyl skirting.
Specialist options include Max Bond 006 for synthetic grass and outdoor sports surfaces, Mapei Ultrabond ECO V4SP for conductive floors and Mapei Adesilex G19 for rubber sports flooring.
Preparation matters as much as the glue. Max Prime primes absorbent subfloors before water-based adhesives, Level-It, Ramp-It and Feather-It level and patch, and Max Bond Adhesive Remover cleans up old adhesive.

What glue do I use for vinyl plank flooring?
Glue down vinyl planks and LVT need an adhesive listed for them. Max Bond 360 MS covers sheet vinyl, LVT and LVP, Max Bond 2012 gives a hard-set bond for PVC planks and tiles, and Max Bond 4000 suits LVT and linoleum. Mapei Ultrabond ECO V4 Evolution and Ardex AF 180 MS are also listed for LVT. Check the flooring maker’s recommended adhesive and the adhesive’s data sheet before you start.
What is the best adhesive for timber flooring?
Use an adhesive made for timber. Mapei Ultrabond ECO S955 1K bonds solid and pre-finished multi-layer timber, including parquet, and Mapei Ultrabond ECO P990 1K suits pre-finished multi-layer parquet and solid interlocking boards. Sika SikaBond T-55J is an elastic polyurethane wood floor adhesive. The Mapei adhesives come in 15kg pails or 600ml sausages for smaller jobs. Follow the timber supplier’s installation instructions as well.
What adhesive is used for linoleum?
Max Bond 4000 is made for LVT and linoleum, as well as sanded-back sheet rubber up to 4mm, and can be applied by the wet or semi-wet method. Max Bond 360 MS and Ardex AF 180 MS are also listed for linoleum. Linoleum makers often specify particular adhesives, so check the flooring manufacturer’s requirements and the adhesive’s data sheet before you buy.
What is the difference between pressure sensitive and hard-setting flooring adhesive?
A pressure sensitive adhesive such as Max Bond 2009 is spread and left until it turns from white and wet to clear and tacky, then the floor is laid into it. It holds the covering without setting hard, which suits carpet tiles. A hard-setting adhesive such as Max Bond 2012 cures fully to a rigid bond, which suits PVC planks and tiles in commercial and domestic installations.
How do I prepare a subfloor before gluing down a floor?
The subfloor should be clean, sound, dry and smooth, and each adhesive’s data sheet sets its own moisture and substrate limits. Max Prime is a water-based primer for absorbent subfloors before water-based adhesives. Level-It L25 levels concrete, Ramp-It fills holes and feathers ramps, and Feather-It smooths minor dips. Max Bond Adhesive Remover helps clean off old, dry flooring adhesive first.
