MDF 3mm Floor Protection Sheeting shields finished flooring from damage during heavy construction-phase activity, laid over a broad range of flooring types and often paired with a underlayer such as Multi-Guard, Polycushion or Protect-IT for extra cushioning.

Description

MDF 3mm Floor Protection Sheeting is a temporary protective layer laid down over finished flooring during construction, giving genuine impact and abrasion protection through the phase of a job when trades, equipment and heavy foot traffic pose the biggest risk to a floor that’s already installed. At 3mm, it’s thin enough to lay quickly over large areas without creating a significant trip hazard, while still standing up to the loads it’s designed for.

On more sensitive floors — engineered timber, natural stone, or anything with a soft or easily-scratched finish — the sheeting is best paired with an underlayer such as Multi-Guard, Polycushion or Protect-IT rather than laid directly. That underlayer absorbs point loads and prevents grit trapped beneath the MDF from scratching the finish through repeated foot traffic.

Where to Use

  • Protecting finished flooring during the construction or fit-out phase
  • Areas subject to heavy equipment or trade traffic before handover
  • Over a broad variety of existing flooring types
  • Sensitive floors, paired with an underlayer product for extra cushioning

How to Apply

  1. Assess the floor’s sensitivity — for delicate finishes, plan to lay an underlayer such as Multi-Guard, Polycushion or Protect-IT first.
  2. Clean the floor — remove grit and debris before laying protection to avoid trapping abrasive particles underneath.
  3. Lay the sheeting — position sheets to cover the area needing protection, butting joins closely.
  4. Tape joins if required — secure sheet joins to prevent shifting under heavy traffic.
  5. Remove after works — lift the protection once the risk of construction-phase damage has passed.

Important Notes

  • This is temporary construction-phase protection, not a permanent flooring underlay.
  • For sensitive or soft-finish floors, use in conjunction with a dedicated underlayer product rather than laying directly on the finished surface.
  • Suitable over a broad variety of flooring types, but confirm compatibility with delicate or unsealed finishes before use.

Timing matters as much as the product choice on a construction-phase job: protection sheeting laid too early can trap grit and debris underneath as later trades track material across it, while protection laid too late misses the risk window it’s meant to cover. On larger sites, it’s common to lay the MDF protection in stages as each area of flooring is completed, rather than waiting until the entire floor is finished and then protecting it all at once — that way, no section of newly-laid flooring is left exposed while later stages of the job are still underway.

Frequently asked questions

What is MDF 3mm Floor Protection Sheeting used for?

It’s a temporary protective layer laid over finished flooring during construction, recommended for areas that will see heavy equipment or foot traffic before the site is handed over.

Should MDF Floor Protection Sheeting be used on its own?

For sensitive floors, it’s recommended to use it in conjunction with an underlayer product such as Multi-Guard, Polycushion or Protect-IT, which adds cushioning between the MDF and the finished floor beneath.
