Before tiles, screeds or waterproofing membranes go down, the surface underneath usually needs treating first. A primer seals dusty or porous substrates, evens out how quickly they absorb water and gives adhesives and levelling compounds a sound surface to grip.
Porous surfaces suit single part primers such as Ardex P9, Davco Ultraprime Porous Primer and Davco PrimeX Multipurpose Primer. Smooth, dense surfaces call for a grip primer like Mapei Eco Prim Grip, while Eco Prim T Plus is another Mapei option. Ardex P82 Ultra Prime is a two-part primer, and Ardex Kiln Dried Primer Sand and P51 Primer and Bonding Concentrate are also listed. Mapeproof Primer is made for use under Mapei waterproofing, and floor and tile primers from other makers round out the category.
