Description
Mapei Mapeproof 1K Turbo is used to prevent flooring failure due to excessive residual humidity in the substrate, where PVC, vinyl or timber is to be laid on cement-based substrates that are not subject to rising damp. It is a one-component polyurethane surface membrane that cures with the humidity in the surrounding air and in the substrate, and it is made by Mapei.
The data sheet describes it as solvent free, odourless and non-flammable, with a short set time that lets timber and resilient flooring be laid after approximately 2 hours in normal conditions. It can also consolidate mechanically weak cement-based substrates.

Where to Use
Used as a moisture vapour barrier on cement-based substrates that are not subject to rising damp, and for consolidation:
- Moisture vapour barrier treatment before PVC, vinyl and timber flooring
- Consolidating mechanically weak cement-based substrates
- Direct bonding of timber flooring with a reactive polyurethane adhesive
How to Apply
- Prepare the substrate. It must be clean and free of oil, wax and dirt. New concrete must be cured for at least 28 days. Cracks and crazing are opened and repaired with Eporip; remove curing compounds, laitance and contaminants mechanically as per AS 1884.
- Check the surface profile. For direct application, the surface must be porous, CSP #2 to #3 and uncontaminated. Otherwise profile it mechanically by dustless, engineer-approved methods. When used to consolidate, the surface must be porous enough for the product to penetrate; abrade excessively smooth substrates to open the pores.
- Apply. Use a roller or brush, undiluted. Do not let it puddle. One coat can be sufficient over concrete with a continuous dry film.
- Second coat if needed. For porous substrates such as screeds, or substrates in poor condition, apply a second layer once the first is suitable for light foot traffic. Wait 40 minutes to 2 hours between coats.
- Install flooring. Timber can be bonded directly with a reactive adhesive such as Ultrabond P990 1K or Ultrabond Eco S955 1K after 2 to 24 hours. If the substrate needs rectifying, or a water based adhesive is to be used, the data sheet requires a minimum 3 mm cementitious smoothing and levelling compound over the membrane: apply the membrane so a thin layer remains on the surface, allow approximately 2 hours to dry, then apply an undiluted coat of Eco Prim T Plus before the levelling compound.
Important Notes
- Do not dilute with water or solvents, and do not apply on wet surfaces or in the presence of rising damp.
- Do not apply on heated screeds as a vapour membrane; it is suitable there as a consolidator only.
- If timber flooring is installed more than 24 hours after application, protect the surface from contaminants and clean thoroughly before applying adhesive.
- For levelling over 10 mm in thickness, apply a second coat and sprinkle Quartz 0.9 AU or clean, dry sand on it while fresh, and remove loose sand once set.
