About Screeds
Uneven slabs, incorrect falls and low spots need building up before tiles or floor coverings can go down. Screeds and rapid set mortars create a new, flat bed over concrete, while ramp and patch compounds deal with local dips and transitions between floor heights.
Ardex A38 Rapid Setting Screed Cement and A48 Rapid Set Cement Screed Mix suit thicker beds, with Ardex Kiln Dried Primer Sand and Premium Grade Aggregate 2.5mm are also listed. Sika offers Sikafloor-215 Rapid Screed, Eco Screed and SikaFloor 050 Ramp and Patch, and Mapei Topcem Pronto AU is a ready mixed mortar. For thin finishing coats over a screed, choose from feather finish and fine finish smoothing compounds or feather-edge patching, with SikaTile 015 Prep N Prime for priming.

How long after laying a screed can I tile?
It depends on the product. Ardex A 48 is ready for tiles after about 4 hours and Ardex A 38 after 8 hours. Sika says to allow 15 hours at 23°C before tiling over Sikafloor-215 Rapid Screed, and Mapei gives 24 hours for ceramic tiles over Topcem Pronto AU. Cold weather and thicker beds slow drying, so check the data sheet for your conditions.
Can I lay vinyl, carpet or timber over a rapid screed?
Yes, but these moisture sensitive coverings need a longer wait than tiles. Ardex gives 2 days for vinyl, carpet and other resilient or textile coverings, and parquet, over A 38 and A 48. Sika allows 3 days at 23°C before waterproof membranes or coverings that do not breathe, such as vinyl, go over Sikafloor-215, and Mapei gives 4 days for timber and resilient coverings over Topcem Pronto AU. Test the floor for moisture before laying.
How thick does a cement screed mix need to be?
Ardex A 38 and A 48 need at least 15mm when bonded, which means laid straight onto the slab over a wet slurry bond coat, as the data sheet describes. Unbonded screeds, laid over a separating layer, need around 35mm for A 48 and 40mm for A 38. Sikafloor-215 Rapid Screed is laid 10 to 100mm bonded or 30 to 80mm unbonded. For shallow dips, a patching or feather finish compound suits better.
Do I need to add sand or gravel to the screed mix?
Not with every product. Ardex A 48 is premixed cement and aggregate, so you only add water, and Sikafloor-215 Rapid Screed is pre-blended and mixed with 1.9 to 2.1 litres of clean water per 20kg bag. Ardex A 38 is a screed cement that is mixed on site with the gravel its data sheet specifies, at 20kg of A 38 to 100kg of gravel. Always follow the mixing table on the data sheet.
What should I use for screed repair or a low spot?
Sikafloor-050 Ramp and Patch is a fast setting mortar for internal and external concrete repairs, laid from 1mm to 50mm thick. Sika says it is not meant to be walked on as the finished surface, so cover it with your floor finish. For shallow dips indoors, Ardex Feather Finish goes from a feather edge up to 3mm. Max Prep Ramp-It is another option for internal patching.
