Before vinyl, carpet, cork or timber goes down, small hollows, trowel marks and joins in the subfloor need filling so they don't show through. Feathering and smoothing compounds fill those minor defects and taper out to a fine edge, leaving a flat surface ready for floor coverings.
Ardex covers most needs, from A30 Featheredge Patching Compound and the Feather Finish and Fine Finish smoothing compounds for thin skim coats, to K12, K15 and K125 levelling and smoothing compounds for larger areas. K275 is a fast dry commercial floor levelling compound, and K60 Arditex is also listed. From MJS, Max Prep Ramp-It handles feather-edge patching and Feather-It gives a smooth finish coat.
