Waiting weeks for a new slab to dry naturally before flooring can go down is a real schedule cost — Mapeproof Primer’s job is specifically to suppress that residual moisture instead, so installation can start sooner without cutting corners on moisture management.

Description

Mapeproof Primer is a one-component, rapid-drying PVDC (polyvinylidene chloride) based dispersion primer built to suppress residual construction moisture before it can affect subsequent flooring installations. That function matters most on a real construction timeline: rather than waiting weeks for a slab to dry naturally to acceptable moisture levels, Mapeproof Primer impedes moisture passage from substrates carrying up to 4.5 CM-% residual moisture (95% RH), allowing earlier flooring installation.

Being ready to use with no mixing, colour-pigmented for coverage uniformity, and low-consumption/high-coverage makes it a genuinely efficient product to apply by roller. Its EMICODE EC1 Plus rating for very low emissions, alongside compliance with ASTM D 1308-87 for resistance to urine, reflects a formulation built for genuine indoor flooring applications rather than a generic moisture barrier repurposed for the job.

Where to Use

  • Damp-proofing cement-based, moisture-resistant, non-heated substrates
  • Insulating residual construction moisture up to 95% RH before levelling compounds
  • Internal flooring applications only

How to Apply

  1. Check the substrate — confirm it is cement-based and not subject to rising damp or underfloor heating.
  2. Apply by roller — apply directly, no mixing required.
  3. Allow to dry rapidly — the primer dries quickly to form a waterproof surface membrane.
  4. Apply the levelling compound — no additional primer or broadcast sand is required over Mapeproof Primer.

Important Notes

  • For internal flooring only — do not use externally.
  • Do not use over anhydrite or other gypsum/sulphate-based substrates.
  • Not suitable for substrates with underfloor heating or subject to rising damp.
  • < That schedule benefit is really the whole value proposition of a moisture-suppressing primer: the underlying concrete still needs to reach its long-term equilibrium moisture level eventually, but Mapeproof Primer lets flooring go down safely well before that natural process would otherwise allow. Being resealable and storable also means an installer doesn't need to estimate exact quantities perfectly before opening a container, reducing wastage on smaller jobs where a full container wouldn't otherwise be used in one application. Confirming the substrate is genuinely cement-based, rather than a gypsum or anhydrite screed, before applying Mapeproof Primer is a quick check that avoids a product mismatch discovered only after application.

Underfloor heating and anhydrite substrates are both specifically excluded because Mapeproof Primer’s moisture-suppression mechanism doesn’t interact predictably with either — heated substrates cycle temperature in a way that can affect the primer film, and anhydrite (calcium sulphate) screeds behave differently to standard cement-based ones in how they hold and release moisture. Confirming the substrate type against these two exclusions before ordering avoids a mismatch that only becomes apparent once the primer has already been applied. Reading the substrate correctly at the outset is a small step that avoids a costly rework once flooring has already been laid over an unsuitable base.

Frequently asked questions

What moisture levels can Mapeproof Primer handle?

Residual moisture content values up to 4.5 CM-%, or relative humidity values up to 95% (tested to ASTM F2170), before the application of levelling compounds.

Can Mapeproof Primer be used with underfloor heating?

No — it’s specifically not suitable for use on substrates with underfloor heating, or over anhydrite/gypsum-sulphate based substrates.

Can Mapeproof Primer be resealed and stored?

Yes — it can be resealed and stored with no particular precautions for future use, which is a genuine practical advantage over a primer that must be used in full once opened.
