Description
Max Prep Feather-It is a rapid-drying finish coat and smoothing compound built to prepare substrates for floor covering installation in as little as 30 minutes, feathering to a fine 3mm edge in a single application without leaving a visible ridge or lip. That speed comes from a genuine chemical reaction rather than simple air-drying, which is why thorough, fast mixing into the water is essential to get a lump-free, workable mortar before it begins to set.
Its coverage varies with application thickness and substrate — up to 30m² per 10kg bag as a thin concrete skim coat, or 20m² specifically at a 1mm thickness over concrete, and even more over plywood. Not needing a primer on suitable substrates like concrete, wood, ceramic and quarry tile removes a preparation step that many smoothing compounds require, though non-porous surfaces like vinyl or glazed tile still need the adhesive supplier’s own installation guidance.
Its rapid cure and thin feather-edge capability make Feather-It especially useful for tricky transition areas — where an existing floor has a slight step, dip or uneven patch that needs correcting before new flooring goes down, but a full self-levelling pour would be overkill. Being able to install flooring after just 30 minutes keeps a renovation moving without a lengthy waiting period, provided the powder-to-water mixing ratio and application thickness are followed correctly to achieve the stated strength and finish.

Where to Use
- Smooth finish coating for concrete, wood, ceramic and quarry tile substrates
- Preparing floors for vinyl, carpet and ceramic tile installation
- Residential and light commercial floor preparation
How to Apply
- Prepare the substrate — ensure it is structurally sound, clean and free of dirt, dust, oil, curing and sealing compounds.
- Mix thoroughly — mix the powder into water in the shortest possible time, ideally with a mixing paddle and drill, to avoid lumps. Do not overwater.
- Apply with a steel trowel — apply sufficient pressure to fill defects and feather the product into the substrate.
- Feather to the required thickness — use only as much product as needed for the desired smoothness.
- Install flooring — most floor coverings can be installed after 30 minutes on suitable substrates.
Important Notes
- Always mix the powder into the water, not water into the powder.
- When applying over non-porous surfaces such as ceramic tile or vinyl, refer to the adhesive supplier’s recommended installation procedure.
- Do not overwater the mix, as this affects consistency and final strength.
