About Cement Grouts
Cement grout is a powder made from cement, aggregates and additives such as polymers, mixed with water and worked into tile joints with a rubber float. It suits most wall and floor tiling in homes. Under ISO 13007 it is coded CG, with class 1 a normal grout and class 2 an improved one, while the letters W and A mark reduced water absorption and high abrasion resistance.
Joint width is the first filter. Davco Superfine White Grout suits 1 to 3mm interior wall joints, and Ardex FS DD suits 1 to 4mm joints, including polished porcelain. Ardex FG 8 covers 1 to 8mm, SikaCeram-690 Elite Grout 1 to 10mm, Mapei Keracolor GG Large Grain Grout 4 to 15mm and Ardex WJ50 Wide Joint Grout 2 to 50mm. Keracolor GG and SikaCeram-690 Elite are classified CG2WA, Davco Superfine White is CG1 under AS ISO 13007 and Ardex WJ50 is CG1 under AS 4992. Davco Sanitized Colorgrout comes in a range of colours for interior and exterior walls and floors.
Additives change how a cement grout performs. Ardex Grout Booster improves adhesion, flexibility and abrasion strength with Ardex cement grouts, and Davco 4 in 1 Grout Additive increases flexibility, strength and water resistance.

What is the difference between sanded and non-sanded grout?
Sanded grout contains sand and is used for wider joints, while non-sanded grout is finer and suits narrow joints and delicate tile faces. Ardex WJ50 Wide Joint Grout is a sanded grout for joints from 2 to 50mm. Ardex FS DD is non-sanded and Ardex recommends it for surfaces prone to scratching such as porcelain, where a sanded grout risks marking the finish during application.
Do I need to seal cement grout?
Cement grout is porous, so a penetrating sealer helps reduce staining, particularly on floors and around kitchens and bathrooms. See Grouts for how long to let it cure before sealing. Some grouts, such as Ardex FG 8 and Ardex FS DD, are water repellent, which helps keep dirt out of the joints but does not replace regular cleaning.
Can cement grout be used in a shower?
Yes, many cement grouts suit wet areas. Davco lists Sanitized Colorgrout for domestic and commercial walls and floors, including wet areas, and Davco Superfine White Grout for shower, bathroom and laundry walls. Grout does not replace waterproofing, though, so a shower still needs a membrane under the tile bed.
