Silicone sealants for bathrooms, kitchens, roofs and workshop repairs. Choose wet area silicones for showers, basins and benchtops, natural stone silicones for marble and stone, roof and gutter silicone, and RTV silicone for gaskets.
Gaps around baths, splashbacks, window frames and roof flashings need a sealant that fills the joint and moves with the materials around it. Silicone sealants are applied from a cartridge and cure into a flexible rubber seal, which makes them a standard choice for joints like these.
In bathrooms and kitchens, look at Soudal Bathroom and Kitchen Silicone, Maxisil A Wet Area Silicone Sealant or Mapei Mapesil AC. Natural stone suits a stone silicone such as Mapesil LM or Maxisil N. Soudal also makes roof and gutter, glass and glazing, all purpose and Contractors 701 NS silicones. The category also has a premium pure silicone and an RTV type suited to gasket work.
Common Questions
Use a silicone made for wet areas. Soudal Bathroom and Kitchen Silicone is a neutral cure silicone for baths, sinks, toilets and showers. Maxisil A Wet Area is designed for baths, showers and toilets and contains fungicides for mould resistance. Mapei Mapesil AC is a mould-resistant silicone for tiled areas, and Soudal Contractors 701 NS adds mould protection with almost no odour.
Use a neutral cure silicone made for natural stone. Maxisil N is formulated for marble and granite, and Maxisil states it will not let softeners from the sealant seep into the edge of the stone. Mapei Mapesil LM is a neutral, non-staining silicone for natural stone. Avoid acetic cure silicones on stone.
Acetic cure silicones release acetic acid as they cure, giving a vinegar smell, and Soudal notes they cure faster but are not generally suitable for sensitive materials. Neutral cure silicones release no acid and have little odour. Maxisil A and Mapei Mapesil AC are acetic cure, while Soudal Bathroom and Kitchen, Maxisil N and Mapesil LM are neutral cure.
Silicone skins over first, then cures inward from the surface, so thicker beads take longer. Maxisil lists Maxisil A Wet Area at about 15 minutes to skin and 2 to 3mm of cure in 24 hours at 23 degrees and 50 percent humidity. Cold or dry conditions slow this down. Check the data sheet for the silicone you are using before turning the shower on.
Soudal Roof and Gutter Silicone is a neutral cure silicone that is UV resistant, colourfast and permanently elastic once cured, in grey or translucent. Soudal Glass and Glazing Silicone shares those properties and comes in translucent or matt black. For gasket work on machinery and equipment, CRC RTV Silicone Sealant cures at room temperature and comes in black, grey or red.
