About Trefolex
Trefolex is the CRC range of cutting lubricants, applied to the tool and workpiece to reduce friction and wear when drilling, tapping, threading and sawing metal. Less friction at the cutting edge helps tools last longer and gives a cleaner cut.
Trefolex Cutting Paste is a green compound that melts slowly as it warms, keeping the cut lubricated through pipe screwing, hack sawing, tapping and reaming. CRC recommends it for taps and dies, hacksaws, reamers and other hand tools in low speed work only, on steel, aluminium, copper, brass and stainless steel. Trefolex CDT Cutting Oil is a highly flammable 300g aerosol for cutting, drilling and thread cutting. A viscosity modifier helps it cling so you can work at any angle, and the low odour formula is safe on brass, copper and aluminium. Trefolex HD Cutting Fluid is a thick, honey-like fluid for severe work, recommended for tapping and drilling stainless steel, carbon steel, titanium, aluminium and alloys such as inconel, monel and hastelloy.
As a guide, choose the paste for hand tapping, threading and hacksaw work. Choose the CDT aerosol for general cutting, drilling and thread cutting, and HD fluid for tough stainless and exotic metals. Read the label and safety data sheet before use.

Can Trefolex Cutting Paste be used for high speed machining?
No. CRC states the paste is strictly for hand tools and low speed cutting, and it should not be used in operations that will or may generate high temperatures. For severe tapping and drilling on stainless steel, titanium and exotic alloys, CRC recommends Trefolex HD Cutting Fluid.
Which Trefolex product suits stainless steel?
Trefolex HD Cutting Fluid is the heavy duty option for stainless steel. It is a thick fluid that clings to the tool through the cut and is recommended for tapping and drilling stainless, carbon steel, titanium and exotic alloys. For hand tapping, reaming and hacksaw work on stainless, Trefolex Cutting Paste is also described as ideal.
Is Trefolex safe on aluminium, copper and brass?
Yes, on all three metals, though the effect differs by product. Trefolex Cutting Paste will not corrode steel or affect aluminium. It can darken the surface of copper and brass, but the metal itself is not harmed. Trefolex CDT Cutting Oil has a formula described as safe on soft metals such as brass, copper and aluminium, and HD Cutting Fluid lists aluminium among its recommended metals.
