Description
MJ52 Stair Nosing with Long Riser is purpose-built for vinyl flooring, using a longer riser profile than the short-riser carpet version (MJ151) to properly cover the step edge where vinyl sheet or plank flooring is installed. Supplied predrilled and countersunk at 220mm spacing in either silver or black anodised finish, it removes a genuine step from installation while giving a real colour choice that isn’t just cosmetic.
That colour choice matters for compliance specifically: AS1428.1-2021 requires profile colour selection as part of accessible stair design, and the luminance reflectance figures — 71.94 dry for silver versus just 5.13 for black — show how differently the two finishes perform for visibility and contrast on a stair edge. As with the rest of the MJ range, the nosing profile itself and the slip-rated insert are specified separately, so the correct insert (MJ152, 50SI or ASAT5020) needs to be chosen to actually meet AS4586:2013.

How to Apply
- Prepare the surface — ensure it is levelled, clean and smooth before fixing.
- Cut to length — trim MJ52 to the required stair width.
- Fix the nosing — drill with an MJS 6mm masonry bit and secure with 6mm plugs and screws, optionally with MJS GF400 adhesive for extra strength.
- Fit the insert — clean both bonding surfaces, apply adhesive evenly, allow it to become tacky (10-15 minutes at 20°C, open time approx. 45 minutes), then press the insert into place with a hand roller.
- Remove the foil protection — peel off the protective foil from visible surfaces after installation.
Important Notes
- Get stair nosing selection approved by the Project Certifier or Access Consultant before installation — compliance requirements are project-specific.
- Wear safety glasses and gloves when cutting or drilling the aluminium profile.
- Once the insert contacts the nosing, no adjustment is possible — position it correctly before contact.
Choosing between the silver and black anodised finish isn’t purely cosmetic — the two colours perform very differently on the luminance reflectance test, which matters where a stair edge needs to stand out clearly for low-vision users under AS1428.1-2021. Silver’s high reflectance makes it the more visible option in most lighting conditions, while black gives a more discreet, blended finish where visual contrast against the flooring itself already provides enough definition.
