Description
Carpet tile on a stair leaves a thick, soft edge that needs covering properly. The MJ58 is the carpet nosing with a long riser, giving enough face down the step to close that edge off cleanly and protect it from the traffic that wears stair nosings first.
It is supplied in 3.66 metre lengths, drilled and countersunk at 220 millimetre centres, and takes a 50 millimetre insert. Fitted with one of the specified inserts it meets AS 4586:2013 for slip resistance.

Luminance Contrast and Colour Choice
AS 1428.1-2021 is not satisfied by fitting a nosing. It is satisfied by the nosing contrasting sufficiently with the tread, so that someone with limited vision can see where each step ends. That makes colour a compliance decision rather than an aesthetic one.
In practice it means choosing silver against a dark carpet tile and black against a light one. Matching the nosing to the carpet, which is the instinctive choice, is exactly what fails the requirement.

How to Apply
- Measure and cut — Cut the 3.66 metre length to the tread width.
- Position — Set the nosing so the long riser closes off the carpet tile edge down the face of the step.
- Fix — Fix through the pre-drilled countersunk holes at 220mm centres. Screws and plugs sold separately.
- Fit the insert — Install the 50mm insert into the 51mm channel.
- Remove the foil — Peel the foil protection from visible surfaces once the area is finished.
Important Notes
- Colour selection matters for AS 1428.1-2021 compliance, because the standard is about luminance contrast against the tread.
- AS 4586:2013 slip resistance comes from the insert, not from the profile alone.
