A carpet stair nosing is only as slip-safe as the insert clipped into it — MJ151’s 51mm channel accepts three different P4/P5-rated inserts, so the compliance rating is chosen at spec stage rather than baked into a single fixed profile.

Description

MJ151 Stair Nosing with Short Riser is a carpet-specific stair nosing profile designed to comply with AS1428.1-2021, supplied in a silver anodised finish with visible surfaces protected by a removable foil film during transport and installation. Being predrilled and countersunk at 220mm spacing removes a real step from installation, and matching screws and plugs — sold separately — complete a fixing system designed specifically for this profile.

The nosing itself is only half the compliance picture: it needs to be paired with a 50mm-wide slip-rated insert — MJ152 aluminium (P4), 50SI PVC (P5) or ASAT5020 anti-slip tape (P5) — to actually meet AS4586:2013 slip resistance requirements. Because stair nosing compliance requirements vary by project and jurisdiction, the manufacturer explicitly recommends the selection be approved by the Project Certifier or Access Consultant before installation, rather than assuming standard compliance covers every application.

Where to Use

  • Stairs finished with carpet tiles requiring a short-riser nosing profile
  • Commercial and public stairways with accessibility and slip-resistance requirements
  • Projects requiring AS1428.1:2021 compliant stair nosing

How to Apply

  1. Prepare the surface — ensure it is levelled, clean and smooth before fixing.
  2. Cut to length — trim MJ151 to the required stair width.
  3. Fix the nosing — drill with an MJS 6mm masonry bit and secure with 6mm plugs and screws, optionally with MJS GF400 adhesive for extra strength.
  4. Fit the insert — clean both bonding surfaces, apply adhesive evenly, allow it to become tacky (10-15 minutes at 20°C, open time approx. 45 minutes), then press the insert into place with a hand roller.
  5. Remove the foil protection — peel off the protective foil from visible surfaces after installation is complete.

Important Notes

  • Get stair nosing selection approved by the Project Certifier or Access Consultant before installation — compliance requirements are project-specific.
  • Wear safety glasses and gloves when cutting or drilling the aluminium profile.
  • Once the insert contacts the nosing, no adjustment is possible — position it correctly before contact.

Splitting the nosing into two separate compliance elements — the aluminium profile itself and a separately specified slip-rated insert — reflects how stair safety standards actually work: the base profile handles the physical transition and fixing, while the insert is what’s tested and rated for slip resistance under AS4586:2013. That separation also means the same MJ151 nosing can be paired with different insert types (P4 aluminium, P5 PVC or P5 anti-slip tape) depending on which slip rating a particular project or Access Consultant specifies, rather than locking the job into a single fixed combination.

Frequently asked questions

What inserts work with MJ151 stair nosing?

MJ152 Aluminium insert (P4 slip rating), 50SI Stair insert (P5 slip rating), or ASAT5020 Anti-Slip tape (P5 slip rating) — all rated to AS4586:2013, sold separately.

How is MJ151 fixed to the stair?

Using an MJS 6mm masonry drill bit with 6mm plugs and screws (sold separately), optionally combined with MJS GF400 construction adhesive for additional strength.

Does the nosing need certifier approval?

While the profile complies with the noted standards, it’s recommended that stair nosing selection be approved by the Project Certifier or Access Consultant before installation, since compliance requirements vary by project.
