Description

Granite Dust is finely crushed granite in a grey and white speckle. Its fine particles screed out to a smooth, even surface, and once dampened and compacted they lock together into a firm layer. That combination is what a paving or turf base needs: easy to level by hand, then solid enough not to move.

Its grey and white colour sets it apart from the tan Granite Sand, and its smooth screeding suits bedding under pavers and stepping stones or a level base under synthetic turf. Collection is from the Keilor East yard, with delivery offered at checkout to postcodes the yard covers.

These are loose-volume figures (volume divided by depth). Allow an extra 10 to 15 percent for the settlement that comes with compacting.

Where to Use

  • Bedding layer under pavers, stepping stones and paving slabs
  • Level base under synthetic turf
  • Compacted topping for garden paths
  • Packing the joints and edges around stepping stones

How to Apply

  1. Prepare the base – excavate to the finished level plus the layer depth, compact the subgrade and fit edging.
  2. Spread and screed – screed 20 to 30mm for paver bedding with a slight fall away from buildings so rain drains off, or spread about 60mm loose for a path.
  3. Wet down and tamp – mist the layer with a hose, then run a plate compactor or hand tamper over it until it no longer gives underfoot.
  4. Lay the surface – set pavers or roll out turf on the bedding, or for a path rake the top smooth and tamp once more.

Granite Dust, Granite Sand or Stone Dust?

  • Granite Dust: fine, grey and white crushed granite that screeds smooth.
  • Granite Sand: a tan granitic sand, also used as a path topping.
  • Stone Dust 3mm and 5mm: graded crushed rock fines for bedding and joint filling.
  • All of these compact well; choose by the texture and colour you want where the surface shows.

Important Notes

  • Ordered by the cubic metre in quarter steps: a quarter, half or three-quarter load is fine for smaller jobs.
  • Loose stone is heavier than it looks, so confirm your trailer or ute payload (on the compliance plate) before ordering.
  • Fine dust from stone and sand can contain crystalline silica, so dampen the load before spreading, don’t dry-sweep it, and wear a P2 mask if it is dusty. See Safe Work Australia for more on silica safety.

Frequently asked questions

What is Granite Dust used for?

Bedding under pavers and stepping stones, a level base under synthetic turf, and a compacted path topping. Dampened and compacted, the fine crushed particles lock into a firm layer.

How is Granite Dust different from Granite Sand and Stone Dust?

They are close relatives that all bed down firmly when compacted. Granite Dust is a grey and white crushed granite; Granite Sand is a tan granitic sand; Stone Dust is sold in graded 3mm and 5mm sizes. Choose by the colour and texture you want, and by the job.

How much do I need?

One cubic metre spreads about 40 square metres at 25mm loose, or about 20 square metres at 50mm. Add about 10 to 15 percent for compaction.

Does it need to be wet to compact?

It compacts best when lightly damp. Mist the layer before compacting; damp fines bind together far better than dry ones.

Can I buy less than a cubic metre?

Yes. It is sold in quarter cubic metre steps, so you can order a quarter, half or three-quarter load.
