Description
Clyde Pure Organic Compost is an organic compost (not certified organic) for improving soil ahead of planting. Garden soil that has been planted repeatedly loses organic matter over time, and digging compost back through it is a simple way to restore it.
Compost improves soil structure as well as adding organic matter: it helps a heavy clay soil drain and aerate, and helps a light sandy soil hold moisture for longer.
It sits alongside Mushroom Compost in the soil range. Mushroom Compost is usually alkaline; this is the general compost.
Work it through the top layer of the bed rather than leaving it on the surface, so the organic matter is in contact with plant roots. For a new bed, mix it through the native soil before planting. Reapply each planting season for heavily used vegetable beds and borders.

Where to Use
- Garden beds ahead of planting

- Existing beds that have become depleted over repeated planting
How to Apply
- Clear the bed: remove weeds and old plant material before applying.
- Spread a layer: dampen the compost and apply an even 50 to 75mm layer across the bed.
- Work it through: dig or fork the compost into the top layer of soil.
- Water in: a thorough watering helps settle the compost into the bed.
- Plant or replenish seasonally: plant into the improved bed, or reapply each season.
Important Notes
- Compost and soil can contain Legionella and other micro-organisms. Wear gloves and a P2 mask, dampen the material before handling, and wash your hands afterwards.
- Working compost into the soil, rather than leaving it as a surface topping, gives better results.
- One cubic metre treats about 13 to 20 square metres at a 50 to 75mm layer; it weighs roughly 0.6 to 0.8 tonnes.
- Pickup only from our Keilor East yard (Melbourne). Sold loose by the cubic metre in quarter-m3 steps; part loads of a quarter, half and three-quarter cubic metre are available.
