About Feature Tiles

Feature tiles are decorative tiles used to draw the eye to one area, such as a splashback, shower niche, fireplace surround or accent wall, while the main floor and wall tiles stay quieter around them. Colour, gloss, texture and small or elongated shapes do the work.

Subway Tiles covers elongated formats, including Ceramica Rondine Nolita and Equipe Cerámicas Verticale extra slim porcelain, Striatura finger tiles, Pequeno satin tiles and Cifre Cerámica Mussa in six colours. Square Tiles includes Elementa natural stone in travertine, Verde Alpi and Calacatta, which also comes in a subway shape, along with Dune Agadir squares. Kit Kat mosaics, made of slim finger-shaped pieces, come from Dune in gloss and matt colours, and Ukibori adds raised, three-dimensional glazed porcelain in a Kit Kat layout.

Dune Tahiti is a porcelain series from Dune’s pool range, in gloss squares and anti-slip versions. Dune publishes a Class 3 result for the anti-slip tiles under the Spanish building code, which is not an Australian AS 4586 P rating. Ask your builder or specifier to confirm the slip rating any floor, step or pool surround needs. Across the range, check each product’s material, location and finish before you choose, and plan adhesive, grout and trims alongside the tile.

Common Questions

Feature Tiles FAQ

What else will I need with feature tiles?

You’ll need a tile adhesive, a grout and edge trims. Tile Adhesives includes white adhesives such as Davco Powder Mastic, suited to light coloured tiles and natural stone. Grouts has colours to match or contrast your tile, and Trims and Edging finishes exposed edges on niches, splashbacks and reveals. Natural stone such as Elementa may also need a sealer from Tile, Stone and Concrete Sealers.

Which grout suits Kit Kat and mosaic tiles?

Kit Kat and mosaic tiles have many joints, so grout colour has a big effect on the finished look. A fine cement grout keeps the lines neat. Ardex FG 8 suits 1 to 8mm joints, and Mapei Ultracolor Plus comes in a wide colour range and suits glass and marble mosaic. Ask us about epoxy grout for hard-working areas.

Do natural stone feature tiles need sealing?

Natural stone is porous, so a sealer helps limit staining. An impregnating sealer keeps Elementa travertine or Calacatta looking natural, while a colour enhancing sealer deepens the tone. Test on a spare tile first. Choose the adhesive carefully too. Green marble such as Verde Alpi is moisture sensitive: Mapei excludes it from their rapid-set adhesive and calls for a reaction resin instead, such as the two-part Mapei Keralastic T, and Davco lists APA as unsuitable for moisture sensitive stone. Ask us before fixing green marble.

Porcelain or ceramic: which suits a feature wall?

Both work on indoor walls. Porcelain absorbs less than 0.5% water under AS ISO 13006, so it suits wet and outdoor areas, and in this range includes Dune Kit Kat, Dune Tahiti, Ukibori and Equipe Cerámicas Verticale. Ceramic tiles are more porous and are used on indoor walls and in domestic wet areas, as with Cifre Cerámica Opal and Mussa. Check the location listed on each product.

Can feature tiles be used outdoors or around a pool?

Only where the product is listed for it, and only for the location named. Dune Tahiti is part of Dune’s pool range, but the gloss squares are listed for walls and waterlines rather than pool floors, steps or surrounds. The anti-slip version carries a European class that is not an Australian AS 4586 P rating. Kit Kat mosaics and the Granadella gloss tiles are wall tiles, and most glazed ceramic feature tiles here are for indoor walls only. Confirm the slip rating any floor, step or pool surround needs with your builder or specifier.
