A 2mm film that bridges more than 2mm of crack movement, Mapelastic Smart is Mapei’s high-flexibility answer to balconies, terraces and pools where the substrate is genuinely expected to move, not just get wet.

Description

Mapelastic Smart is a two-component, high-flexibility cementitious membrane built for waterproofing balconies, terraces, bathrooms and swimming pools, and for protecting concrete structures against cracking. Its flexibility is the standout figure: a 2mm film carries crack-bridging capacity greater than 2mm itself, backed by 170% elongation at failure to Class II of AS/NZS 4858, genuinely high performance for a cementitious (rather than purely liquid or sheet) membrane.

Beyond wet-area waterproofing, it’s also used to protect concrete pillars, beams and viaducts repaired with Mapegrout or Planitop products against carbon dioxide penetration, and concrete exposed to sea water, de-icing salts or sulphates — genuine infrastructure-grade protection, not just a residential wet-area product. It can also be applied directly over existing tiles, which matters for renovation jobs where stripping back to substrate isn’t practical.

Where to Use

  • Waterproofing bathrooms, showers, balconies, terraces and swimming pools before tiling
  • Hydraulic channels, dam faces, basins and storage tanks, including potable water
  • Protecting cracked cementitious renders and concrete against moisture and carbon dioxide infiltration
  • Concrete exposed to sea water, de-icing salts or sulphates

How to Apply

  1. Mix — combine Component A and Component B at a 2:1 ratio to a fluid, brushable consistency.
  2. Apply the first coat — by trowel, roller or spray gun; embed Mapetex Sel or Mapenet 150 reinforcement on stressed or cracked substrates.
  3. Apply as at least two even coats — maintain the minimum final dry film thickness required for the application.
  4. Allow to cure — respect the pot life (1 hour) and avoid disturbing the membrane while curing.

Important Notes

  • Component A stores for up to 12 months, Component B for up to 24 months, both in original sealed packaging in a dry place at +5°C or above.
  • Wash tools with water before the mortar sets; once set, cleaning is mechanical only.
  • For professional use only.

The gap between a rigid waterproofing membrane and one that’s rated for real substrate movement matters most on exactly the surfaces Mapelastic Smart targets — balconies and terraces exposed to thermal cycling, and pool surrounds subject to constant wetting and drying. A membrane without genuine crack-bridging capacity can waterproof a substrate perfectly on the day it’s applied and still fail within a year once seasonal expansion and contraction opens hairline cracks the membrane can’t stretch to cover. At 170% elongation, Mapelastic Smart is built to keep moving with the substrate rather than being the first thing to crack.

Frequently asked questions

How much crack movement can Mapelastic Smart handle?

A 2mm thick film has a crack-bridging capacity greater than 2mm, with 170% elongation at failure to Class II of AS/NZS 4858 — enough to accommodate shrinkage cracking and minor movement from thermal gradients or vehicle traffic.

What is the mixing ratio for Mapelastic Smart?

Component A (powder) to Component B (liquid) at a ratio of 2:1 by weight — supplied as a matched 30kg kit (20kg powder + 10kg liquid) so the ratio is correct straight out of the box.

Can Mapelastic Smart be applied over existing tiles?

Yes, it can be applied on existing tiles as well as new substrates, which is useful for renovation waterproofing where full tile removal isn’t practical.
