MGP10 90 x 35mm pine is a lighter structural framing section, seasoned, dressed and machine stress graded. It is commonly used for internal walls and other framing where the AS 1684 span tables or the project engineer allow a 35mm section. Available in 2.4m and 2.7m stud lengths and 3.0m to 6.0m lengths.

Description

MGP10 90 x 35mm pine is a lighter structural framing section, commonly used for internal walls and other framing that does not need the extra width of a 45mm member. The framing is seasoned (dried), planed to accurate and consistent dimensions, passed through a machine stress grader and visually inspected, so members can be selected from the span tables in AS 1684 Residential Timber-Framed Construction or specified by an engineer.

The 90mm depth matches 90 x 45mm framing, so walls built from either section finish at the same thickness and take the same jambs and linings. The MGP10 grade is set by stiffness: WoodSolutions explains that the 10 is a rounded characteristic modulus of elasticity of 10,000 MPa. Machine stress graded timber is graded to AS/NZS 1748, with grade properties verified by in-grade testing to AS/NZS 4063.

Length Options

Length Typical use
2.4m Studs cut to height for internal walls with 2400mm ceilings; noggings
2.7m Studs cut to height for internal walls with 2700mm ceilings
3.0m to 3.6m Taller internal studs, bulkhead and ceiling framing
4.2m to 6.0m Plates for long internal walls with fewer joins

Where to Use

  • Internal partition walls, where the span tables allow
  • Bulkheads, service walls and wall linings over masonry
  • Built-in robe and cupboard framing
  • Noggings and blocking within 90mm walls

How to Use

  1. Confirm the section: check the AS 1684 span tables or the design drawings allow 90 x 35mm for each wall and member.
  2. Store: keep packs flat, off the ground and covered until the frame is closed in.
  3. Set out: set studs out from the corner so lining joints land on framing, doubling studs where a lining system needs a wider landing.
  4. Fix: nail or screw to the AS 1684 fixing schedule; pre-drill near ends if splitting is a risk.
  5. Protect: close in the frame promptly so the timber stays dry.

  • Member sizes must be confirmed by your builder, designer or engineer; this page is not structural design advice.
  • This framing is untreated. Keep it dry and inside the building envelope; it is not for exposed, in-ground or wet locations.
  • Termite management requirements depend on your location and are covered by AS 3660.1 and the National Construction Code; check with your building surveyor and use H2 treated framing where required.
  • Priced and sold per length; choose the length from the options above.

Frequently asked questions

Can 90 x 35mm pine be used for load-bearing walls?

Sometimes. The AS 1684 span tables show where 90 x 35mm MGP10 is adequate for a given wall height, stud spacing and load, but many load-bearing walls call for 90 x 45mm. Check the tables or the engineer’s design, or ask your builder, before substituting.

Can I use 90 x 35mm studs at plasterboard or cladding sheet joints?

Check the sheet manufacturer’s requirements first. Some fibre cement systems require at least 42mm of timber at sheet joints and do not allow 35mm framing there without doubling the stud.

Is this pine treated?

No. This MGP10 framing is untreated and must be kept dry inside the building envelope. Termite management requirements depend on your location, so check with your building surveyor, and use H2 treated framing where it is required.
