Description

SCX1 Duracote Solidor is a 40mm solid core flush door from Corinthian, faced with a smooth Duracote skin that is ready for paint. At 40mm thick it suits external door frames rebated for a 40mm door, and it is equally suited to internal openings where a heavier, more solid door is wanted.

Compared with a hollow core door, the solid core adds weight and stiffness and generally reduces sound transfer between spaces. The taller 2340mm height suits homes with higher ceilings, and the 920mm width gives a wider opening. Solid doors are heavy, so check the hinge requirements below before hanging.

Hollow Core or Solid Core?

Choose a hollow core door where a lighter door is wanted, such as cupboards and low-use rooms. Choose a solid core door where the door will see heavy use, where you want less sound transfer between spaces, or for a covered external entry where a stiffer door is wanted.

Where to Use

  • Back and side entries under a verandah, porch or deep eave
  • Garage-to-house doors, after checking fire-rating and self-closing requirements with your building surveyor
  • Home offices and bedrooms where a quieter door is wanted
  • Studios and granny flats with covered entries

How to Install

  1. Measure: check the frame height, width, rebate thickness and squareness, allowing about 3mm clearance at the top and sides.
  2. Trim: plane only within the 5mm trimming allowance, keeping cuts even.
  3. Hinge: fit at least three 89mm hinges, and trial hang the door.
  4. Seal: remove the door and apply two coats of exterior paint or sealer to both faces and all edges, including top, bottom and hinge check-outs.
  5. Hang and fit out: re-hang, fit the lockset and add weather seals for external openings.

Important Notes

  • Pickup only from our Keilor East yard.
  • External doors must be installed in weather-protected openings; doors fully exposed to rain and sun are not suitable.
  • Corinthian recommends light reflective colours (LRV above 50) for sun-exposed doors; finish both faces the same.
  • Seal both faces and all edges, including the top, bottom and hinge check-outs, before hanging; Corinthian states that failing to do so can void the warranty.
  • Check with your building surveyor under the National Construction Code where a fire-rated door may be required.
  • The solid core is heavy; handle and hang with two people.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a solid core and a hollow core door?

A hollow core door has a lightweight honeycomb core, while the SCX1 has a solid core. The solid core makes the door heavier and stiffer, and solid core doors generally reduce sound transfer more than hollow core doors.

Can the SCX1 Duracote door be used as an external door?

Yes, when it is installed in a weather-protected opening such as under a verandah or deep eave; doors fully exposed to rain and sun are not suitable. It is a plain flush door, so it suits back, side and secondary entries. Check with your building surveyor whether your opening needs a fire-rated or self-closing door, for example between a garage and the house.

How many hinges does this door need?

Corinthian specifies a minimum of three 89mm hinges for entrance and solid construction doors. Always follow Corinthian’s installation instructions and the hinge maker’s load ratings.
