Description
Stone Dust 5mm is a fine crushed rock used as a bedding layer under pavers, and as a smooth, stable base for paving, driveways and walkways. Its fines lock together when dampened and compacted, giving pavers an even bed so they sit flat.
Pavers that rock or sink are usually a bedding problem. Screed the stone dust 20 to 30mm deep to a consistent level, using screeding rails set to the finished height, and dampen it slightly without saturating it. Work in small sections so the bed is not disturbed before the pavers go down.
It sits alongside the finer Stone Dust 3mm, which suits tightly jointed paving.

Where to Use
- Bedding layer under pavers
- General compaction applications
- Sweeping into paver joints where suitable
How to Apply
- Prepare the base – compact the sub-base before adding the bedding layer.
- Spread the bedding layer – distribute Stone Dust 5mm 20 to 30mm deep over the compacted base.
- Screed to a level depth – screed for a consistent, level bedding surface.
- Lay pavers on top – place pavers directly onto the screeded bedding layer.
- Sweep and compact – sweep excess material into joints and compact the finished paving.
Important Notes
- Screeding to a consistent, level depth is essential for an even paved surface.
- Also suitable for sweeping into paver joints.
- Pickup from Keilor East (Melbourne). Sold loose by the cubic metre in quarter-m3 steps; part loads of a quarter, half and three-quarter cubic metre are available.
- Crushed stone contains crystalline silica: keep it damp when spreading or sweeping, avoid breathing the dust, and wear a P2 mask if it is dry and dusty.
- Roughly 1.5 to 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre: a quarter cubic metre is about 400 kg.
