Description
Bedrock Road Base is a graded blend of crushed rock and fines for use as a compacted sub-base under paths, paving and small concrete slabs, and for patching an existing driveway or shed base. It is a base material, not a finished surface.
The mix of particle sizes lets the finer material fill the gaps between larger stones, which helps reduce settlement when it is laid and compacted in layers. Spread it in layers of about 50 to 75mm and compact each one with a plate compactor or hand rammer, and grade the base so water runs away from buildings.
The 20kg bag suits smaller jobs that do not need a loose load.

Where to Use
- Sub-base under paths and paving
- Base preparation before concreting
- Patching and topping up an existing driveway or shed base
- Firm base under stepping stones, sleepers and edging
How to Apply
- Excavate to depth – remove topsoil and excavate to the required sub-base depth.
- Spread in layers – lay in manageable layers rather than one deep pour.
- Compact each layer – compact thoroughly before adding the next layer.
- Grade for drainage – ensure a slight fall away from structures.
- Finish with the surface layer – lay the path, paving or concrete once the base is compacted.
Important Notes
- Proper layer-by-layer compaction is essential for the base to perform as intended.
- A plate compactor is recommended for anything beyond a small path.
- Store dry.
- Crushed stone and sand contain crystalline silica. Keep the material damp when spreading or sweeping, avoid breathing the dust, and wear a P2 mask if it is dry and dusty.
- Pickup only, from our Keilor East yard.
