About Hybrid Flooring
Hybrid planks are a floating floor made from a rigid core with a printed timber-look surface and wear layer, clicked together over a prepared subfloor. They suit living areas, bedrooms and whole-home renovations where a consistent timber look is wanted from room to room.
All four collections come from Sunstar. Authentic Hybrid covers species looks including Spotted Gum, Blackbutt, Blackwood and Marri, as well as Tasmanian Oak, Hickory and European Oak. Maxi Hybrid and Maxi Smooth Finish are wider boards in colours such as Torquay, Rustic Blackbutt, Coastal Spotted Gum and Elwood Grey. Maxi Smooth Finish has an ultra matte surface rather than an embossed one. Classic Hybrid is the thinner 5.5mm board, with colours including Mountain Spotted Gum, Murray and Carina.
Every range carries a 5 star acoustic rating and an underlay built into the plank, so no separate foam underlay goes underneath. Wear layers run from 0.35mm to 0.5mm, with AC3 and AC4 ratings covering residential and light commercial use.

Hybrid Flooring FAQ
How water-resistant is hybrid flooring?
Sunstar says water will not damage the boards themselves, and they cope with wet mopping and everyday spills. Water that gets under the floor is different: it can damage the subfloor and lead to mould, which the warranty excludes. Wipe up spills promptly, don’t let mop water flood the edges, and talk to us before using hybrid in a bathroom or another wet area, because Sunstar asks for extra installation steps there.
How is hybrid flooring installed?
The planks use the Unilin Click system and float over the subfloor without glue. Sunstar’s guide asks for installation by suitably qualified trades, a 10mm expansion gap around the whole perimeter, and no skirting, trims or caulking fixed to the floor so it can move with the seasons. Boxes cover 2.01 to 2.8 square metres depending on the range, so measure your room and allow extra for cuts.
What's the difference between the Sunstar hybrid ranges?
Authentic Hybrid is a 7mm plank, 183mm wide, with an embossed surface and an AC4 rating. Maxi Hybrid and Maxi Smooth Finish are also 7mm and AC4 but wider at 230mm, and Maxi Smooth Finish has an ultra matte smooth surface instead of an embossed one. Classic Hybrid is thinner at 5.5mm and shorter at 1530mm, with a 0.35mm wear layer and an AC3 residential rating.
Do I need underlay under hybrid flooring?
Not a foam one. Every Sunstar hybrid range has an integrated underlay: IXPE foam on Authentic Hybrid, Maxi Hybrid and Maxi Smooth Finish, and EVA foam on Classic Hybrid. Sunstar’s installation guide says foam underlays should not be used underneath. Where extra sound control is needed a rubber underlay may be possible, but Sunstar must approve it first, so ask us before you buy one.
Can hybrid flooring go over an existing floor?
It depends on what is there now. Sunstar asks for a clean, structurally sound subfloor, flat to within 3mm over a 1000mm radius, with concrete no wetter than 4.8% moisture. If your current floor can’t meet that, it will need preparing or lifting first. Tell us what’s underneath and we can help you check it against the installation guide for your range.
