Description

WD-40 Multi-Use Product is the classic light amber spray for lubricating, protecting, penetrating and displacing moisture on metal parts and fittings around the home, workshop or vehicle. One product covers several jobs: freeing a seized bolt, quieting a squeaky hinge, stopping surface rust forming on tools, or clearing water out of an electrical connector after it’s been rained on.

The formula is tested against recognised standards rather than just marketed on the claim — it’s rated for lubrication and protection to ASTM D4172, extreme pressure lubrication to ASTM D3233, and corrosion protection under salt spray testing to ASTM B-117, which is a demanding accelerated-corrosion test.

Where to Use

  • Hinges, wheels, rollers, chains and gears needing lubrication
  • Tools and sporting equipment needing rust and corrosion protection
  • Seized or corroded nuts, bolts, valves and locks
  • Removing adhesive residue, light corrosion and some paint
  • Water-affected electrical fittings and equipment, to displace moisture

How to Apply

  1. Shake the can — before use, to ensure the formula is properly mixed.
  2. Apply a light, even spray — direct at the hinge, fitting or affected area from a short distance.
  3. Allow it to work — for penetrating stuck fittings, give it a few minutes before attempting to move the part.
  4. Wipe away excess — on surfaces where a residue isn’t wanted, wipe off any excess after use.

The formula’s low viscosity is part of what makes it a genuine penetrant rather than just a surface lubricant. At 2.8 cSt it is thin enough to work into a tight, corroded thread that a heavier oil would sit on top of rather than penetrate. The extreme pressure lubrication rating of 1,200 lbs under ASTM D3233 also points to genuine load-bearing lubrication, not just a light surface film.

Important Notes

  • Aerosol formulation — use in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling spray mist.
  • Not water-soluble; clean spills with an appropriate degreasing method rather than water alone.
  • Keep away from open flame or ignition sources, as with any aerosol lubricant.

Frequently asked questions

What is WD-40 Multi-Use Product used for?

It lubricates moving parts like hinges, chains and gears, protects metal tools and equipment from rust and corrosion, penetrates stuck or corroded fittings, removes adhesive and light corrosion, and displaces moisture from water-affected parts.

Is the 57g can big enough for regular use?

It’s a compact size, well suited to keeping in a toolbox, glovebox or drawer for occasional jobs. For frequent or heavier use, a larger can or trigger spray from the WD-40 range covers more ground per fill.
