Description

Firewood Redgum is red gum, a dense eucalypt hardwood, supplied mostly split and ready to stack. Dense hardwoods are prized as firewood because a load of dense timber holds more fuel than the same volume of a light softwood and tends to burn down to a bed of coals rather than flaring away.

It is sold by the cubic metre, with quarter, half and three-quarter part loads, so the same product can stock a woodpile for the colder months or simply cover a few evenings around a fire pit. Pick it up at the Keilor East yard, or select delivery at checkout if your postcode is in the delivery area.

How to Store and Burn

  1. Stack off the ground – stack on pallets or rails so air moves under the wood and it does not draw moisture from the soil.
  2. Cover the top – keep rain off the top of the stack but leave the sides open to the air.
  3. Bring in a day’s supply – keep only what you will burn soon beside the heater, away from the firebox.
  4. Burn in the right appliance – use it only in a heater, fireplace or fire pit designed for wood, following the maker’s instructions.
  5. Check outdoor restrictions – before lighting a fire pit, check the fire danger rating and whether a total fire ban applies.

Choosing a Load Size

  • A full cubic metre suits a household stocking a woodpile for a run of cold weeks.
  • A half or three-quarter load suits topping up an existing woodpile.
  • A quarter load suits occasional fire-pit evenings or a first try of this wood.

Important Notes

  • Quantities go up in quarter cubic metres, from a quarter load to as many full cubic metres as the job needs.
  • Firewood is bulky. Check your trailer’s payload on its compliance plate before choosing a quantity.
  • Dry firewood lights more easily, burns cleaner and gives more heat than damp wood, so store it under cover.
  • Before lighting a fire outdoors, check the fire danger rating and total fire bans with CFA Victoria.
  • For tips on burning wood efficiently and reducing smoke, see EPA Victoria.

Split red gum, a dense eucalypt hardwood used as firewood, supplied mostly as split pieces ready to stack.

Can I burn red gum in a wood heater?

Yes. It suits wood heaters, slow-combustion stoves, open fireplaces and outdoor fire pits. Burn it only in an appliance or fire pit designed for wood, following the maker's instructions.

How much firewood should I order?

A full cubic metre suits stocking a woodpile; a quarter or half load suits occasional fires or topping up. Quarter, half and three-quarter cubic metre part loads are available.

How should I store firewood?

Stack it off the ground with the top covered and the sides open, so it stays dry while air moves through the stack. Dry wood lights more easily and burns cleaner.
