Slate Rock 50mm is crushed slate in blue-grey pieces with rust tones, used as a long-lasting stone mulch in garden beds, borders and feature areas. Unlike bark or wood chips it does not rot down, so it doesn’t need the regular top-ups that bark does. Supplied loose, by the cubic metre, in quarter-m3 steps.

Description

Slate Rock 50mm is crushed slate in pieces of around 50mm, in blue-grey with rust tones. Laid as a stone mulch it gives garden beds and borders a strong, layered texture, with a colour quite different from the warm browns of bark or the whites of decorative pebbles.

Stone does not break down like organic mulch, so a bed laid at the right depth keeps its cover without the yearly top-up that bark needs; its colour may weather over time. Pieces vary in shape and tone, which gives a natural, layered look. Collect it from the Keilor East yard, or choose delivery at checkout where it is offered to your postcode.

Where to Use

  • Garden beds and borders as a long-lasting stone mulch
  • Feature areas and around specimen plants
  • Native and dry gardens
  • Around water features and dry creek beds

How to Apply

  1. Prepare the base – remove weeds, level the soil and lay weed mat, overlapping the joins.
  2. Edge the bed – fit edging so the slate stays in the bed.
  3. Spread the slate – lay 50 to 70mm deep, enough to cover the weed mat fully.
  4. Arrange the pieces – turn larger flat pieces face-up around plants and features for a natural finish.

Choosing Between Garden Covers

  • Slate Rock 50mm: crushed slate stone mulch that lasts, with a strong blue-grey colour.
  • Black Mulch and Pine Bark: organic mulches that add organic matter as they break down but need topping up.
  • River Pebble 20-45mm and Tuscan Rock: other decorative stones for feature areas.

Important Notes

  • Crushed slate pieces can have sharp edges. Wear gloves when handling and spreading.
  • Sold loose by the cubic metre in quarter-m3 steps, so quarter, half and three-quarter cubic metre part loads are available.
  • Check your trailer’s payload on its compliance plate before choosing a quantity; loose stone and sand are heavy.
  • Stone and sand can carry fine dust containing crystalline silica. Keep the material damp while spreading or sweeping, avoid breathing the dust and wear a P2 mask in dry, dusty conditions; Safe Work Australia has guidance on silica dust.

Frequently asked questions

What is Slate Rock 50mm?

Crushed slate in pieces of around 50mm, blue-grey with rust tones, used as decorative ground cover and stone mulch instead of wood mulch.

Does Slate Rock break down like wood mulch?

No. Stone does not break down like organic mulch, though its colour may weather over time. Laid over weed mat it stays in place as long-term ground cover.

How much do I need?

At 70mm deep one cubic metre of Slate Rock covers about 14 square metres; at 50mm it covers about 20. Measure the area, multiply by the depth in metres, and round up a little.

Should I use weed mat under it?

Yes. Weed mat under the slate greatly reduces weeds coming through and helps stop the stone sinking into the soil.

How is it sold?

Loose by the cubic metre, in quarter cubic metre steps, so a quarter, half or three-quarter load is fine for a small job.
