Description
Soft Fall Mulch is a chunky, wood-based loose mulch. It is commonly used under backyard play equipment such as swings, slides and climbing frames, and it also works as a plain, coarse garden mulch.
We have not tested it to AS 4422, the Australian standard for playground surfacing, and we make no claim about impact attenuation or critical fall height. For home play equipment, follow the equipment maker’s surfacing requirements. For public or community playgrounds, use certified, tested surfacing.
Like any wood mulch it compacts, scatters and breaks down over time, so check the layer regularly and top it up where it has thinned.

Where to Use
- Under backyard swings, climbing frames and similar home play equipment, following the equipment maker’s surfacing requirements
- Garden beds and paths where a plain, coarse mulch suits
- Not for public or community playgrounds, which need certified, tested surfacing
How to Apply
- Check the equipment maker’s requirements: they set the surfacing type and depth for their equipment.
- Prepare the area: clear debris and level the base before laying.
- Spread evenly: rake to an even layer across the area.
- Check regularly: play areas see more foot traffic and displacement than garden beds.
- Top up: replenish the layer as the mulch compacts and breaks down.
Important Notes
- Not tested to AS 4422. We make no claim about impact attenuation or critical fall height.
- For public or community playgrounds, use certified, tested surfacing.
- Pickup only from our Keilor East yard (Melbourne). Sold loose by the cubic metre in quarter-m3 steps; part loads of a quarter, half and three-quarter cubic metre are available.
- Coverage is simple arithmetic: one cubic metre covers about 10 square metres at 100mm deep, or about 3.3 square metres at 300mm. Mulch weighs roughly 300 to 400 kg per cubic metre.
