River Pebble is a naturally rounded, water-worn stone in a 20-45mm range, chosen where angular crushed rock would look manufactured: zen gardens, dry creek beds and pond edges. The pebbles roll rather than lock, so keep them to beds and features, not walked paths. Sold loose by the cubic metre in quarter-m3 steps for pickup from Keilor East.

Description

River Pebble is a naturally rounded, water-worn pebble supplied in a 20-45mm range. Its smooth, rounded shape gives a natural look in zen gardens, dry creek beds and around water features.

As a stone it does not break down like an organic mulch. Laid over a prepared, weed-matted base it is a low-maintenance ground cover. Stones vary in size within the range, and mixing them gives a natural, graded finish.

How to Apply

  1. Prepare the base – level the soil and lay weed mat, overlapping the joins.
  2. Spread the pebbles – lay about 50mm deep, covering the weed mat fully.
  3. Shape the feature – grade larger stones toward the centre of a creek bed for a natural look.
  4. Top up – replace any pebbles displaced over time.

Important Notes

  • Rounded pebbles roll, so they are not suited to walked paths.
  • Sold in quarter cubic metre steps.
  • Available for pickup from Keilor East.
  • Crushed stone and sand contain crystalline silica. Keep the material damp when spreading or sweeping, avoid breathing the dust, and wear a P2 mask if it is dry and dusty.

Frequently asked questions

What is River Pebble best used for?

Zen gardens, dry creek beds, pond and water-feature edging and decorative cover between plants, wherever a soft, natural, water-worn look is wanted instead of angular crushed rock.

What size are the pebbles?

They run from about 20 to 45mm, so expect a natural mix of sizes within that range. Mixing sizes is part of what gives a dry creek bed its natural look.

Can I use River Pebble on a path?

It is not ideal. Rounded pebbles roll underfoot and do not lock together, so a pebble path stays loose. For a walked path use a compacting topping or Crush Rock 20mm and keep pebbles for beds and features.

How much do I need?

At 50mm deep one cubic metre of River Pebble covers about 20 square metres; at 70mm deep it covers about 14. Measure the area, multiply by the depth in metres, and round up a little for settling.
