Description

Sika’s SikaTile-015 Prep N Prime is a blue liquid primer built for the surfaces a standard cement-based system struggles to bond to: non-porous, smooth or glossy substrates such as existing vinyl tile and laminate. Its fast-drying formulation is aimed at keeping tiling schedules moving rather than waiting out a slower conventional primer.

Being tinted blue when wet is a practical feature as much as a colour choice — it makes it straightforward to check that a surface has had full, even coverage before moving on to the next step. That matters more on non-porous substrates than porous ones, because there’s no absorption to signal a missed patch the way there is on bare concrete, so a visual check is the only real way to confirm coverage before priming dries.

Where to Use

  • Non-cushion-backed vinyl tiles and laminates ahead of tiling
  • General non-porous and shiny or glossy surfaces in dry areas, where a standard cement-based primer would not key in reliably
  • Priming ahead of waterproofing membranes on smooth substrates
  • Areas of negative hydrostatic pressure where standard porous primers aren’t appropriate
  • General wet-area substrates that need to accept a membrane or adhesive despite having little natural porosity
  • Suitable substrate preparation for both waterproofing membrane systems and tile adhesive systems

How to Apply

  1. Prepare the surface — it must be clean, dry and free of dust before priming.
  2. Apply the primer — spread evenly to achieve full coverage, using the blue colour as a visual check for consistency.
  3. Allow to dry and harden — the surface must be completely dry before waterproofing or tiling proceeds.
  4. Proceed with the system — apply the waterproofing membrane or adhesive once the primer has fully cured.

Important Notes

  • SikaTile-015 NPP must be fully dry and hardened before the waterproofing membrane or adhesive is applied over it.
  • Suitable for areas subject to negative hydrostatic pressure, in addition to standard non-porous priming.
  • For porous substrates, use a porous-surface primer such as SikaTile-010 Secure Prime instead.
  • Drying speed still depends on ambient temperature and airflow; check the surface by touch rather than relying on elapsed time alone.

Frequently asked questions

What surfaces is SikaTile-015 NPP designed for?

Non-porous and shiny or glossy surfaces, including existing vinyl tiles that aren’t cushion-backed, laminates, and other smooth substrates that a standard primer won’t key into properly.

How much area does a litre of SikaTile-015 cover?

Approximately 8 to 10 square metres per litre. Its blue colour when wet makes it easy to check for full, even coverage before it dries.

How long does the primer need to dry before tiling?

It’s a fast-drying formulation, but the surface must be fully dry and hardened before waterproofing or tiling proceeds — check by touch rather than by elapsed time alone, since drying speed depends on conditions.
