Description
Crush Rock 20mm is crushed rock that keeps its fines, so it compacts into a firm, stable base. It is used for driveways, paths and hardscapes, either as the base under pavers or a topping, or as a finished gravel surface on an informal driveway or path.
Compaction is what makes it work. Spread it in layers and compact each one, ideally with a hired plate compactor for anything bigger than a small path. Left loose, crushed rock shifts and ruts under traffic.
Because it compacts tight, it is not a drainage stone. Grade the finished surface so water runs off, and use Screening 20mm where you need free drainage. Base depth depends on your soil and traffic; check with your builder or engineer for driveways.

Where to Use
- Driveways, as a base layer or finished surface
- Garden and general access paths
- Base under pavers and paving
How to Apply
- Excavate to depth – remove topsoil and excavate to the base depth: about 75 to 100mm for a path, 100 to 150mm for a driveway, plus the finished surface.
- Spread in layers – lay in manageable layers rather than one deep pour.
- Compact each layer – compact thoroughly before adding the next layer.
- Grade for drainage – ensure a slight fall away from structures.
- Finish as required – use as the finished surface, or add pavers or a topping layer on top.
Important Notes
- Compact in layers for a stable result; uncompacted rock shifts and ruts under traffic.
- Not a drainage stone: it compacts tight. Use Screening 20mm for drainage.
- Base depth depends on your soil and traffic; check with your builder or engineer for driveways.
- Can serve as a finished surface or a sub-base depending on the job.
- Pickup from Keilor East (Melbourne). Sold loose by the cubic metre in quarter-m3 steps; part loads of a quarter, half and three-quarter cubic metre are available.
- Crushed stone contains crystalline silica: keep it damp when spreading or sweeping, avoid breathing the dust, and wear a P2 mask if it is dry and dusty.
- Roughly 1.5 tonnes per cubic metre: a quarter cubic metre is about 375 kg.
