Not every floating floor sits on the same sub-floor, and where ground moisture is a genuine risk, stepping up to a metalised film underlay is the straightforward fix.

Description

Silvertread Floating Floor Underlay is a 2mm EPE (expanded polyethylene) foam underlay laminated to a metalised PE film, built specifically for superior moisture resistance over a standard foam-and-film underlay. That metalised film is the detail that sets Silvertread apart — it’s genuinely better suited to sub-floors carrying more ground moisture exposure than a typical suspended timber floor well clear of the ground would face.

It’s ideal for flooring applications where the sub-straight sits in close proximity to the terrain, which is exactly the scenario where standing or rising ground moisture is more likely to reach the underlay from below. The 2mm EPE foam layer still does the cushioning work a floating floor needs underfoot, so choosing Silvertread over a standard underlay doesn’t trade away comfort for moisture resistance — it adds the moisture resistance on top.

Supplied as a 1.2m wide by 50m long roll covering 60m² per roll, Silvertread installs the same way as any floating floor underlay — rolled out in full-width runs with joins kept tight and minimal across the room. That practical pack size covers a decent room without an excessive number of joins, keeping the moisture barrier as continuous as possible across the floor.

Because the metalised film is laminated directly to the foam rather than supplied as a loose separate sheet, there’s no risk of the moisture barrier shifting out of position during installation. For a ground-level sub-floor or any application where moisture exposure is a genuine concern, Silvertread’s metalised film construction is the more appropriate choice over a standard moisture-resistant underlay like SoftWalk.

Technical Specifications

Material 2mm EPE foam, laminated to metalised PE film
Thickness 2mm
Roll size 1.2m x 50m
Coverage 60m² per roll

Where to Use

  • Floating floor installations where the sub-floor sits close to the ground
  • Applications with higher ground moisture exposure than a standard suspended floor
  • Rooms needing both underfoot cushioning and superior moisture resistance

How to Apply

  1. Prepare the sub-floor — ensure it is clean, dry and free of debris before laying.
  2. Roll out full-width runs — position the underlay across the room to minimise joins.
  3. Butt join adjoining rolls — keep joins tight without overlapping, to maintain a continuous moisture barrier.
  4. Trim to the room’s edges — cut cleanly against skirting and door frames.
  5. Lay the floating floor — install the finished flooring directly over the underlay.

Important Notes

  • Best suited to sub-floors located close to the ground where moisture exposure is higher.
  • Distinct from Gilmores’ 3mm ‘Quiet Silvertread’, which carries an additional acoustic rating — this listing is the 2mm Silvertread.
  • Ensure the sub-floor is dry before laying — the metalised film manages ongoing moisture, not standing water.

Frequently asked questions

How does Silvertread differ from SoftWalk?

Both are 2mm EPE foam underlays, but Silvertread is laminated to a metalised PE film for superior moisture resistance, making it the better choice where the sub-floor sits close to the ground.

When should Silvertread be used over a standard underlay?

Where the flooring sub-straight is located in close proximity to the terrain — that ground-level exposure is exactly the higher-moisture scenario the metalised film is built to handle.

How much does one roll cover?

60m² — the roll measures 1.2m wide by 50m long.
