Sealant accessories are the products used before and after applying a sealant, such as silicone, MS polymer or polyurethane, to get a clean joint that lasts. Preparation and clean-up matter as much as the sealant itself.
Ormonoid AbelRod is a closed-cell polyethylene foam backer rod, pushed into wide or deep joints before sealing. It controls how deep the sealant sits and prevents three-sided adhesion, where sealant sticks to the back of the joint as well as both sides. That lets the bead stretch and compress as the joint moves instead of tearing. Its recovery properties help it keep contact with the joint walls through repeated movement, and less sealant is needed.
Soudal Cleaner and Degreaser is a quick-drying spray that removes grease, oil, tar, wax and uncured MS, PU or silicone sealant, and prepares surfaces before sealants or adhesives go on. It leaves no residue on most metals and plastics. Soudal Sealant Remover is a non-drip hydrocarbon spray made to break down cured silicone and MS polymer residue on ceramic tiles, glass, aluminium, coated metals and painted surfaces, but not nylon or PMMA. Why use a backer rod in a sealant joint?
A backer rod fills the depth of a wide joint so the sealant sits at a controlled thickness and bonds only to the two sides, not the back. That lets the bead flex as the joint opens and closes instead of tearing, and it means less sealant is used. Ormonoid AbelRod is closed-cell foam that recovers after repeated compression.
How do I remove old silicone?
Cut away as much of the old bead as you can, then spray Soudal Sealant Remover onto the residue. It is made to break down cured silicone and MS polymer sealant and does not drip off vertical joints. Clean the joint with Soudal Cleaner and Degreaser before resealing. Test first, as the remover can stain porous surfaces and is not for nylon or PMMA.
Can Soudal Cleaner and Degreaser remove cured sealant?
It is made for uncured excess MS, PU and silicone sealant, along with grease, oil, tar and wax. For cured silicone or MS polymer residue, use Soudal Sealant Remover first, then the cleaner and degreaser to leave a clean, residue-free surface ready for the new sealant.
