About Insulation Wrap
Insulation wrap is a reflective foil insulation fitted within the roof or wall of a building, usually at the framing stage, to slow the heat passing through. A bright foil face reflects radiant heat, the kind you feel from a sunlit roof, and a foam or bubble core adds insulation depth behind it.
All four products here are from Polycell. Roll sizes differ by thickness, so check the roll on the product you choose. ThermaWrap is built on a closed-cell XPE foam core, a firm foam whose sealed cells trap air, with a bright aluminium foil face. Its low-emissivity antiglare backing cuts glare for installers without dulling the reflective face. It comes in 4mm, 6.5mm and 8mm thicknesses, for which Polycell publishes material R-values of R0.13, R0.18 and R0.21 tested to ASTM C518 with no airspace. A foil’s installed performance depends on the airspace beside it, so check the thermal resistance your build needs with your builder or energy assessor. Polycell makes ThermaWrap for commercial roofing, residential roofing and external wall construction, and publishes AS 1530.2 and AS 1530.3 fire test results for it.
ProGuard 12mm Fire Retardant Insulation Foil uses a different build: a core of 32mm diameter bubbles laminated with woven foil and EPE foam, with a white fire retardant additive in its LDPE. Polycell publishes no R-value or fire test result for ProGuard, so ask your builder or certifier what your job has to meet before specifying it.
