CORK CONCEPT

Cork Concept brings amazing natural designs to cork flooring, combined with all the advantages of cork, including comfort, thermal insulation and sound reduction.

CorkArt Cork Concept Floating Floor Harmony NN is an enhanced variation on the traditionally accepted ‘raw’ cork flooring that we have grown to know and love. CorkArt has taken the concept of cork flooring and completely transformed it. CorkArt have used the shock and sound absorbing characteristics of cork as the basis for a fashionable flooring plank having the beautiful natural finish of raw cork. Cork Concept floor planks use a high-resistance ‘Natural Shield’ water-based urethane varnish to provide the ultimate surface protection. Complementing the beauty of the natural cork finish, CorkArt uses a variety of fashionable hard-wearing colourised finishes to complete the product range.

CorkArt Cork Concept Floating Floor Harmony NN is just one of the many fashionable flooring designs available from within the ‘Cork Concept’ Collection. This amazing product range is now available in Australia, direct from CorkArt – located at the home of the world’s Cork Oak forests in Portugal.

BENEFITS

Cork is natural, recyclable and biodegradable. No natural or man-made material replicates its properties. In a world of growing environmental awareness, the cork oak survives without the use of chemical herbicides, fertilizers or irrigation. Moreover, it’s the only tree that regenerates after harvesting. Cork retains unique qualities of flexibility elasticity and compressibility. Its extreme resilience, impermeability, lightness and insulating efficiency make it ideal for a wide range of applications

PROPERTIES

Cork is the outer bark of the evergreen cork oak (Quercus suber). This variety of oak grows mainly in Portugal, Spain, Southern France, Italy, and the Maghreb. It consists of a tight web of up to 40 million cells per cubic centimetre. The cell membranes retain gas, giving cork its capacity to float, insulate and re-expand quickly after compression.

CHARACTERISTICS

Cork is a natural raw material, is 100% recyclable and biodegradable. It is an exceptionally light raw material. Furthermore, no natural or man-made material replicates its properties.

In a world of growing environmental awareness, the cork oak tree survives without the use of chemical herbicides, fertilisers or irrigation. Moreover, it’s the only tree that regenerates after harvesting. It is very flexible and has elastic memory: it can be compressed to around half its thickness, without losing any flexibility, and once decompressed it returns to its original shape. It is also practically impermeable to liquids and gases. It is highly decay resistant, particularly to moisture. It is an excellent thermal, acoustic and vibration insulator.

In construction, it has clear advantages with regard to the quality of buildings, indoor air and comfort, and may be used in the waterproofing of infrastructure, foundations and underlays, in acoustic and thermal insulation and the final coverings for floors, walls, ceilings and roofs.

USES

Due to its characteristics, cork is ideal for a large number of applications, such as a closure for wine and spirits. Cork is used in industries as diverse as floors (floating floor and cork tiles), shoe manufacturing, construction (insulator planks), automotive (gaskets), leisure (fishing rods), upholstery (cork textile) and a wide range of cork finished articles (handbags, wallets, accessories)

HEALTH ADVANTAGES

Research carried out by University of Porto reveals that cork has antioxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties. When applied to flooring and footwear, cork contributes to improve posture and reduces physical effort.

INSTALLATION PREAMBLE

The following details are provided as an introduction only. The “Cork Concept Laying Instructions” sheet pdf link is to be found beneath this written Product Detail.

Responsibility for the suitability of cork Parquet tile for each individual installation cannot be assumed by CorkArt, since CorkArt has no influence on the installer’s method of application. Should an individual Cork Concept tile be doubtful as to appearance or dimension the installer should discard this piece. CorkArt will replace this product in a timely manner.

‘CorkArt Cork Concept Floating Floor Harmony NN’ is a natural cork product. Just like wood, cork parquet tiles and planks will vary in shade or pattern definition. Also, while not as prevalent as with wood, cork is subject to the normal behavior of minor expansion during periods of high humidity and minor contraction during periods of low humidity.

With cork, expansion and contraction can be kept to unnoticeable levels by stabilizing the building through temperature and humidity control, allowing for proper acclimatisation of the product prior to installation and providing the recommended expansion space (detailed per the “Cork Concept Laying Instructions” pdf, attached).

LAYING INSTRUCTIONS – CorkArt Cork Concept Floating Floor Harmony NN

It is recommended that ‘CorkArt Cork Concept Floating Floor Harmony NN’ floorboards, be stored inside their original package, at room temperature, at least 48 hours prior to the beginning of laying work.

During installation, maintain temperature and relative humidity to a level consistent with the conditions that will prevail when room is occupied. With improper acclimation, the floor could expand or contract after installation. Ideal temperature in the room where the installation will be done is 18o C (65o F) and a relative humidity between 50 to 60%.

Sub-floor
The sub-floor must be even, perfectly dry, flat and clean. Variations should not exceed 3mm each 3 meters.
Floating floor can be installed on top of hard surfaces such as ceramic tile, wood flooring or resilient floor coverings. You should not install cork floating floor on top of carpets or other soft sub-floors.

On cement surfaces and ceramic tiles or on sub-floors where rising damp is possible, a 0.2 mm polyethylene sheet must be laid prior floating installation. The rolled lengths of foil should overlap about 20 cm. Turn the film upwards 5 cm along the walls and trim after the skirting boards and profiles are fixed.

Planning the floor installation
It is necessary to measure the room accurately, at the right angle to the direction of the floor planks. The floor planks of the last row should have a minimum width of 10 cm. If it becomes necessary the floor planks in the first row can be cut to smaller sizes.
The cork-floating floor should not be fixed to the sub floor. There should be expansion joints of 10-15mm to walls and other fixed objects, such as pipes and door frames.

If the dimensions of the floor areas where Cork Floating Floor is to be placed are greater than 10 meters in length or 8 meters width; in transitions between two rooms and on asymmetrical floor areas it is necessary to use expansion joints in the floor installation.

The planks should preferably be laid lengthwise in the room or in the same direction as the light falls.
Before installation the planks should be controlled. Should a plank be doubtful as to appearance or dimension the installer should not use this piece.

Cork is a natural product and variations in color or structure are to be expected, and not considered as defected material. The texture of cork varies from plank to plank, which makes it totally impossible to equalize every cork plank.

To achieve a pleasant floor, mix the planks from several cartons. Material installed in a certain area should be, if possible, from the same batch.

Glueless installation
‘CorkArt Cork Concept Floating Floor Harmony NN‘ is prepared with a tongue and groove binding, which allows even amateurs to work with this type of floor.

CorkArt uses the patented UNICLIC® System. It is a revolutionary system which permits the installation of floors without using glue. It uses an ingenious tongue and groove mechanism to simply click the panels together.
The simple junction of every unit using the UNICLIC unglued system is a main advantage in making it a very easy and glue-less process when installing the CorkArt Cork Concept Floating Floor.
